*Tuning Jets for Power*
Carburetors are designed using replaceable brass restrictors leading from the fuel bowls into the main wells. These restrictors, known as jets, are engineered to limit the amount of fuel delivered to the venturis. Jets can be likened to a given size hole that will only let a certain volume of fluid through over a given amount of time. When replacing jets, you are simply changing the hole size, either allowing more or less fuel to flow through the carburetor.
When tuning an engine for the best possible power, it's often necessary to alter the fuel curve. This is because changes in heat, humidity, and atmospheric pressure affect the engine's fuel demands. You've probably heard of motor sports tuning aficionados referring to jetting up or down to get the best performance. We supply performance parts to competition race bikes all over the world. Generally in most conditions you jet up to increase the fuel/air mixture for peak performance. However, when you race your pocket bike at Los Angeles County Raceway, you almost always need to jet down, due to the track's 3,000-foot elevation. There's less oxygen up that high, and you need to put less fuel into the engine to make the most power.
