Old-fashioned reciprocating compressors use pistons and valves to compress and move gas, but with a scroll compressor, these noisy, high-wear moving parts are eliminated.

Simplified

Two spiral-shaped members fit together, forming crescent-shaped gas pockets. One member remains stationary, while the other is allowed to orbit around it. Gas is drawn into the outer pocket created by the 2 members, sealing off the open passage. As the spiral motion continues, higher gas pressures are created, forcing the gas through the discharge point at the center of the scroll.
