WONDERFUL Mid Century Modern Abstract Oil PAINTING by William OscarKasso
Here we have a super painting from the artist W O Kasso. Super composition and form right in line with the artists he admired, Picasso and Braque. The piece framed measures 36 by 31 inches, the actual work 28 by 22 in and is in original frame. This piece came from an estate of long time art dealer who had residences in NYC and Santa Fe NM. Bio below.
William Oscar Kasso, (AKA Bill or
Willie), was a professional artist his whole life. He usually signed
(if he did) his paintings with his last name, Kasso. Though not much
publicized, he was a fairly prolific artist and was much loved by his
friends and patrons. He did not like working with dealers, and sold
most of his work by word of mouth. He was written up in his local
newspaper for his artistic talents when in high school. He had a full
scholarship to Syracuse University based on his artistic talents.
Kasso
was born December 21, 1915 and grew up in the town of Solvay, New
York. He was a Conscientious Objector in WWII and was stationed for
several years in work camps for COs during the War, building roads,
fighting forest fires etc. (civil service). After the war, in 1945, he
married artist Marjorie Wende Kasso at Madison Avenue Presbyterian
Church in Manhattan and in the late 1940s, they settled into Patchin
Place on West 10th St. in New York City where they began to make a
living painting. He became acquainted with some of the locals, such as
E.E. Cummings who wrote a poem about him and his son Chris as well as a
note for an invitation to one of his shows in the 1950s.
William’s
Trompe L’oeil paintings and Surrealist paintings from the late forties
and early fifties sold out. He did portraits of several members of the
Theatre, including Lynn Riggs, Elizabeth Montgomery, Walter Huston,
Helen Hayes, and others including Harvey the Rabbit (ThePookah) for the
original Broadway production in the 40s. He preferred abstract
painting and would devote months at a time to a painting.
In
the late 1950s he moved up to a townhouse on East 80th St. in
Manhattan. He became financially independent in the 1970s and spent
the rest of his life painting abstract paintings (full time) which,
after a point, he refused to sell to anyone despite several hopeful
offers. In his last 20 years he painted about 30 abstract paintings
which are still owned by the immediate family.
Alfred Vanderbilt
collected and commissioned some of his works and they traveled to
Europe together in 1953, and after that they also went on a cross
country trip to California together. He admired Picasso and Braque and
modern art in general, and seemed to want to extend or modernize the
old cubist movement. His last painting was an abstract of break
dancers which represented to him a love for life and expression, a
vitality which he wanted to be a part of even as he approached 80.
