"Synergy Ear Training for All Musicians"
Synergy Ear Training (retailing at $39.95) is the first resource we know of that implements the use of mp3 format for ear training. You will get a total of 2,464 beautifully recorded mp3 files of ALL intervals, chords, and single notes played on a very high quality Martin acoustic guitar. (three hours of files on the file CD)
*You don't have to play guitar for this training to boost your musical ear!
What makes Synergy so remarkable is that you can create your own custom drills through the use of iTunes technology. For example, simply make a playlist of Perfect Fourths and perfect Fifths and have them play at random and listen till you master them. New intervals could then be added to the list one at a time. (You do not need iTunes to take use of these files...playlists can be made on any media player on your computer)
Synergy was developed after evaluating different methods and growing frustrated that I didn't have much control of really drilling myself on my weak spots. If I had trouble I had to rely on listening to taped drills instead of a randomized method of learning. Through the use of iTunes or any other mp3 player program I have been making play-lists of intervals that I need help in. Synergy has all the intervals on the guitar played both harmonically and melodically. (both in descending and ascending fashion.) From this collection of mp3s one can make there own drills custom to there own trouble areas. All you have to do is make a play-list from the Synergy files to iTunes or Windows Media Player (any media player) and select the random or shuffle feature. Intervals will be played at random with the according answers following every clip a few seconds later. And yes, these files are played and recorded on a wonderful Martin guitar. If you get one wrong simply play it over and over (3-5 times) to help your confidence in that area. I would first learn an interval melodically then add the harmonic examples soon after. Start with Perfect 4ths and Perfect 5ths melodically. Then add the harmonic clips to your drills. As you add a new interval, spend time listening to that interval alone before adding it to your drill collection. Here is a list of all the interval types in the suggested order of study. (Remember to study the melodic examples of each before adding the harmonic)
Repetition is the key to ear training. It is truly amazing in what your mind can learn through consistent practice. Along with all the intervals played melodically and harmonically we added 26 chord types played in all 12 keys, played in 4 different fret positions per chord. 26 x 12 x 4 = 1248 chords! After each chord you get the name of the chord including the note name. You can first start out by learning proper minor and major chord identification and then once that is mastered you can add a Maj7 and a min7. Just simply make a playlist of what you want to learn and learn from your computer or upload to your mp3 player so you can listen on the go. Of course you can also burn a CD and build a collection of drills to use in your car while driving to work. In due time you will then find it far easier to recognize and identify chord types in your favorite music.

Perfect Pitch has many varying degrees. The propensity to learn this skill does vary from person to person. But we have put in all the individual notes of the guitar for you to either come up with your own drills from a different method...or to use our suggested sequence of notes to study. Learning notes in the correct sequence helps you to not rely on your relative pitch for identifying tones. This is an excellent way of being able to sing any tone when asked. This is an excellent package that until recently was sold separately. Since shipping is FREE Worldwide I decided to just put the Real Books Fake Books and Synergy Ear Training all together. And of course over 500 professional jazz MIDI files!
