Grand pair of antique double doors
salvaged from Southeastern Pennsylvania. Each
door has a solid pine core covered with 1/4" thick red oak veneers. Please don't think that "veneer" means inferior
quality. Unlike the paper-thin veneer of today's doors and furniture, used
mostly to disguise the inferior quality materials underneath; these veneers
are thick and add strength and stability to the door's overall construction.
Each door has 1 arched lite and 2 raised panels contoured with elegant,
stepped, applied (raised) molding on both sides. The raised molding on both
sides is a significant feature, and a sign of high quality and prominence.
If you look at most entry doors, all of the fancy features are on the front
side, and the backs are plain.
Restoration: At the point of salvage, the doors were painted
and stained, had broken and delaminated portions of veneer, a broken
astragal (stop molding or divider strip attached to the inner edge of one of
the doors), and was missing some hardware.
We've stripped and sanded the doors, replaced all of the broken veneer
using antique red oak, and replaced the broken astragal with one we made
using new red oak.
*Although the patches are made of the same wood the original veneers are
made of; they appear lighter in color because they were freshly cut from
deep within the oak lumber we used. Once stained, the original veneer and
new veneer will blend evenly.
Hardware: We found the doors equipped with all of the hardware
shown in the photos minus the knobs and hinges. The door has an antique
entry set made by "Russell & Erwin Mfg. Co." We didn't have any plain,
heavy, R&E bronze knobs to match, so we added a decorative pair of heavy
bronze knobs made by R&E during the 1880's. We also made a skeleton key to
operate the lock, and could make more-see "Additional Services" below.
The matching strike plate is included, but hasn't been installed. We
removed it when we replaced the astragal, and it's better left for your
carpenter to install once its time to hang the doors.
For extra security, the door has an antique, "Yale" rim lock located
above the entry set. The original mortise cylinder was a bit corroded, so we
replaced it with a newer one with 2 working keys.
The door is also equipped with a spyglass, and a bronze mail door and
back cover.
The original flushbolt (see last 2 hardware photos) is included, but
isn't installed. The mortise for the bolt was patched by mistake. However,
we could reinstall it free of charge--let us know after the auction.
The door takes six, 5"x5" hinges, but we only have five available. Hinges
that size are tough to find, however, we'll keep an eye out for a 6th and if
we find one, we'll include it.
We removed the paint from the hardware, and partially cleaned all parts
leaving as much of the patina as we could.
* If you don't like all, or some of the hardware; we could remove it and
patch the holes--email us for a quote.
Condition: Both doors are strong, sturdy, heavy, and in
excellent condition. There are only minor surface scrapes and scratches.
The glass has some scratches around the edges, but unless you invite giants
to your home; no one will ever notice.
This is truly a great find. Look around for a spectacular pair like this and
compare prices. I've seen un-restored doors like these with little or no
hardware selling for $3,000 - $5,000. True, many of those doors come with a
frame, however, we could build a custom frame for you, for a good price--see
"Additional Services" below. Another thing to keep in mind about those
un-restored doors; you could only judge the quality and condition based on
what you see on the surface, which is usually heavily painted or covered
with dark stain and varnish. However, there are almost always surprises
buried underneath the numerous layers of paint or varnish. With these doors,
there is no mystery! No headaches, extra work, mess, or potential to damage
the doors, if you don't know what you're doing.
Dimensions:
Width (both doors together): 49
1/2"
Height (top of arch):
110 3/8"
Height (sides):
85 7/8"
Thickness: 1 7/8"
Additional Services:
1.
Framing: We could make a pine frame for the doors for
$375 ($600 for an oak frame). With the frame built, all you would have to do is finish the frame
with the paint or stain of your choice, and then connect the parts of the
frame and attach the door to the frame. Framing requires precise measuring
and cutting; with this step out of the way, installation would be much
easier
and quicker.
2.
Height Change: We could cut the bottom of the doors for $55, and we could also add to them,
to make them taller for $110. Please note that if we add to the doors, the addition would be very noticeable
if stained, and is only recommended if you are going to paint the doors.
3.
Skeleton Keys: We could make additional keys to operate the
mortise lock for $5/key.
