Up for sale in this auction are 5 Freshly Dug Adam and Eve Wildflowers Tennessee Grown Wildflowers. Hardy to Zones 3-9. Prefer partial to full shade. The Puttyroot Orchid or Adam-and Eve (Aplectrum hyemale) blooms in late May until early June. Its flowers are well camouflaged and often overlooked. The white-striped winter leaves grow flat on the forest floor. The chances are that a display of beautiful little flowers will be seen, if your timing is correct. This orchid has a corm filled with a glutinous substance which accounts for the "puttyroot" name. Usually there are two (bulblike) corms side by side which perhaps explains "Adam-and-Eve."the plant is most noticed during the winter, when nothing else is green on the ground. Puttyroot puts out a single leaf in late summer that persists until the plant flowers the following spring. So all winter long, you will see these unusual leaves on the forest floor - they are a dusky grey-green in color, deeply creased and looking like crepe paper. In spring, the leaves die back by the time the flowers have opened. The flowers stalk is about 1 foot high, bearing very nondescript greenish-purple flowers about a 1/2 inch long. Most people don't notice the flowers, but they do notice the leaves in winter A classic woodland wildflower. Excellent when massed in a shaded woodland garden, naturalized area or wildflower garden. Mixes well with other spring wildflowers and ferns which you all know we have the other plants to blend. These perennial wildflowers are amongst the favorite of many woodland shade gardners. Look at the beauty of them in the picture shown. We took many pictures while out digging last year and will be adding much more to our auctions and store.
