five ads for Steinway Pianos
(with art by N. C. Wyeth)
1921 - 1922
This is a group of 5 advertisements which all appeared in The Literary Digest magazine in 1921 or 1922. They are all full-page, black-&-white ads, on sheets measuring 9 x 12 inches in size. The sheets were extracted from old bound volumes, and have small punch holes along one edge, but these holes are in the blank margins, and do not affect the advertising text or illustrations. One ad also has a small old ex-library ink stamp in its margin, but otherwise they are in fine condition.
Each ad bears the heading, "STEINWAY — THE INSTRUMENT OF THE IMMORTALS", and features an illustration of a musical artist or allegorical scene, above a text relating them to Steinway pianos. Two of the illustrations are from paintings by N. C. WYETH.
The one with a Paderewski portrait includes testimonial text by the pianist himself, under the title "AN APPRECIATION by IGNACE J. PADEREWSKI. His plaudit has these beginning and ending sentences: "The supreme qualities of the Steinway piano have been for many years universally recognized. . . . The Steinway piano is an unmistakable product of love of profession, and to it I pay my tribute of high esteem and admiration."
The illustrations done by N.C. Wyeth have these captions:
*** "Wagner & Liszt — Painted for the Steinway Collection by N. C. WYETH"
*** "Beethoven and Nature — Painted for the Steinway Collection by N. C. WYETH"
The other three ads are captioned:
*** "MacDowell Composing his 'Woodland Sketches' "
*** "An Interpretation of MacDowell's Indian Suite — Painted for the Steinway Collection by Ernest Blumeschein"
*** "Paderewski — Painted for the Steinway Collection by Charles E. Chambers"
