Lot Description:
This is a group of 5 attractive, higher quality Sahara Neolithic arrowheads from the region of northern Mauritania (south-western Sahara desert). These all have reddish or pinkish hues as the main colors.
The largest tool is a large Algerian Eiffel Tower point, seen at the left, it is 1 5/8th inches (41 mm), the smallest is over 1 1/4th inches (32 mm). Each point in this group is special is some way: glossy material, color, lithic, and/or style; they are some of my favorite relics.
The condition is very good, there are a couple of tiny ancient dings to be found, especially to tangs. This is a very nice sampling of ancient tools, with good color.
These are very nice, much better than average Neolithic projectile points of the type you would pick up with lots of luck if you had the opportunity to visit Neolithic sites deep in the Sahara. These relics are better in hand than picture can convey. They were lost or discarded by our New Stone Age hunter gatherer ancestors 4,000 - 6,000 years ago.
Neolithic populations living around lakes in what is now the Sahara desert; used these tools in the hunt for and processing of waterfowl and small game found along the shores of once abundant Sahara lakes and rivers. The end of the Ice Age resulted in global climate changes which dried the lakes and forced these Neolithic (New Stone Age) peoples into new modes of existence, either agriculture which was just beginning at the end of the Neolithic, or a nomadic animal husbandry mode of existence. The New Stone Age was a very dynamic era giving rise to agriculture, pottery, and permanent settlements, all of which were milestones in humankinds march toward 'civilized' life. The Sahara Neolithic lasted from 9,000 to 4,000 BP (years Before Present).
