The Fifth
King Ngawang Losang Gyatso (1617-1682) was the
first to effectively combine spiritual and secular
rulership of Tibet. Among his many achievements,
Ngawang Losang Gyatso united three provinces
of Tibet in 1642, for first time since mid-ninth
century .
Ngawang Losang Gyatso had a profound influence
on the role that the Kings would play as leaders
of the Tibetan people. He emphasized connection
between the King and Avalokitesvara especially
in his rebuilding of the Potala. The Potala
is named after a mountain in India, “Lord of
the World” which is considered to be the divine
palace of Avalokitesvara. This emphasis helped
establish the notion that the Kings were indeed
incarnations of the Avalokitesvara.
When Ngawang
Losang Gyatso came to power, he established laws,
appointed governors and ministers, and formed an
entire government. He even established a national
dress system of uniforms for officials. He sent
representatives to the border towns of Kham and
areas in central Tibet to reduce heavy taxes, resolve
feuding, establish monasteries, and resettle abandoned
areas. Shakabpa points this out as a demonstration
of Ngawang Losang Gyatso ’s political and religious
leadership.
Another spectacular achievement ofNgawang Losang
Gyatso is the incredible buildings he had constructed.
He founded the great Labrang monastery in Kham and
he built other monasteries dominating hilltops rather
than hidden among mountains and hills as had been
traditionally done. The most outstanding of these
structures is the the Potala Palace which looks
over Lhasa (Snellgrove and Richardson 199).
Ngawang Losang Gyatso also wrote more literature
than all other Kings combined . Such works included
a commentary on the Abhidharmakosa (“Treasury of
Philosophical Notions”), rhetoric and astrology,
a treatise on monastic discipline, guide to Jo-lehang,
a history of Tibet, and a book about the composition
of poetry.

This excellent
Thangka is gathered from a Lama in Zuglakang
Monastery,

Zuglakang
Monastery Zuglakang Monastery
in Lhasa is a representative of temples built on flatlands.
The monast6ry began construction in the seventh century,
with extensions over the centuries, and it is preserved
to this day.
The gate of the
monastery faces west and is close to Barkor Street
which encircles Zuglakang Monastery. Everyday, believers
make a clockwise circular perambulation to show respect
for the Buddha.
Walking through
a doorway with a porch, across a thousand-Buddha verandah,
one finds the Johkang Hall, the main hall of the Zuglakang
Monastery. Johkang Hall is in a plane, square shape,
with four layers on all sides, partitioned into small
Buddhist halls. The Buddhist hall on the axis houses
the statue of Sakyamuni brought by Princess Wencheng,
In another Buddhist hall, there are the statues of
Srong-brtsan-sgam-po, Princess Wencheng and Princess
Chizun from Nepal. The center is a large space leading
up to three floors with a flat top. There is a gilded
copper roof on the middle of each of the four sides
of the fourth floor. Its figure is modeled after the
structure of the Han nationality, and there is a truncated
turret on each of the four corners.
Outside the front
gate of the monastery is a small encircled yard inside
which there is a willow tree said to have been planted
by Princess Wencheng, as well as the Fanhui League
Monument of the Tang Dynasty and a monument designed
to persuade people to accept vaccination.
The gate of the
Zuglakang Monastery, the Thousand-Buddha Verandah
and the Johkang Hall, plus the small encircled yard,
seem to play the role of a screen wall, and together
constitute an axial symmetric space series. The encircled
yard and the concave temple gate form a small square
in front of the monastery, which is the starting-point
of the series. The Thousand-Buddha Verandah is wide
and spacious, while the Johkang Hall is closed and
inhibited, providing a stark contrast. The golden
roof of the Johkang Hall is full of distinguishing
features: short eaves are arranged surrounding the
top of the entire square outer wall to bind up the
whole hall, and extend outward from the four golden-top
halls that create a multi-eaved effect. Additionally,
with the set-off of the turret, the image is particularly
rich and beautiful.
4 Hands
Chenrezig:
Chenrezig is a form
of Avalokiteshvara. Chenrezig is also known as the Buddha
of Compassion or 4 armed Avalokiteshvara. Of all the deities
in Mahayana Buddhism, the bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, Chenrezig
, is one of the most celebrated. He is the lord endowed
with complete illumination, who refrains from entering the
blissful state of nirvana to remain here below and save
the creatures of the earth. This devotion to the salvation
of others emphasizes the profound compassion this bodhisattva
represents. In the Tibetan Buddhist pantheon of enlightened
beings, Chenrezig, Avalokiteshvara, is renowned as the embodiment
of the compassion of all the Buddhas, the Bodhisattva of
Compassion. Avalokiteshvara, Chenrezig, is visualized in
many forms, with various numbers of faces and arms, and
various colors and ornaments. The radiant white Buddha form
representing purity and power of the enlightened mind's
loving kindness and compassion is illustrated above and
at the very top of this page. He sits on a lotus and the
flat disc of the moon, with another moon disk behind him,
reflecting his total purity. Two of his four arms are joined
in the prayer position holding the wish fulfilling gem.
In his other left hand he holds a lotus flower and in his
other right hand, a crystal mala (rosary), which he is using
to count the repetitions of his mantra, Om Mani Padme Hum,
Hail to the Jewel in the Lotus, which liberates all beings
from suffering. He wears the silks and ornaments of a Bodhisattva,
representing all his special qualities, and the soft skin
of an antelope over his shoulder, symbolizing his complete
freedom from violence. He smiles with deep understanding,
love and compassion as his eyes look upon all beings. The
four arms and hands signify the four immeasurable: immeasurable
loving kindness, immeasurable compassion, immeasurable joy,
and immeasurable equanimity. Chenrezig, the Bodhisattva
of Boundless Compassion, is the very embodiment and realization
of the four immeasurable. The four immeasurable are the
vehicles through which Chenrezig benefits beings. "The
first two, the inner arms, have palms joined at the heart,
holding a sky-blue, and wish fulfilling jewel." This
symbolizes that in whatever way Chenrezig manifests to benefit
beings, the quality of Chenrezig's mind is never separate
from the all pervasive primordial wisdom. In the outer right
hand, Chenrezig is holding crystal beads and moving them
the way we use a mala to count mantras. This symbolizes
that there is not one moment when Chenrezig does not benefit
beings. Like the steady movement of counting the beads,
Chenrezig is continuously benefiting sentient beings and
turning the wheel of enlightened activity. In the outer
left hand, Chenrezig holds a lotus flower. This symbolizes
that in benefiting sentient beings, Chenrezig manifests
in whatever forms are necessary in accordance with the mental
capacities, circumstances, and aptitudes of sentient beings.
Chenrezig may appear in any of the different realms, such
as the hell realm or the hungry ghost realm. However Chenrezig
may appear, he remains free from any of the samsaric stains
of the various realms, the way a lotus flower growing in
a swamp appears free of the stain of the mud. The left hand
of Chenrezig, holding the flower, symbolizes that stainlessness.
All the various features of this image have meaningful connections
to the wonderful qualities of Chenrezig, and by focusing
on these details as we visualize the image in the meditation,
we can gradually awaken our own awareness of those same
qualities in ourselves.
