Up for auction this classic Charles and Ray Eames early production "Compact Sofa" for Herman Miller.
The sofa compact's striking profile and crisp, light scale evolved from a built-in sofa that Charles and Ray Eames designed for the living room of their Pacific Palisades home. Knowing this makes the name "compact" seem less curious for a sofa that's over 6 feet long and provides such comfortable support from shoulders to knees.
Originally designed in 1954, this light-scaled Eames compact sofa gives all the comfort usually associated with long, low, heavy sofas. Two horizontal foam pads form the sofa's comfortably high back. A black enameled steel frame and chrome-plated tubular steel legs provide the foundation. It fits well where bulkier, traditional sofas don't and is perfectly scaled for tight spaces in executive suites, lounges and homes.
One confusing point, we know without a doubt this is a Eames piece, what we can't figure out is why the early Herman Miller button says its a George Nelson design. Mmmmm, maybe a human error in the factory, kinda cool.
Don't miss this oppurtunity to add this piece of iconic mid century design to your home.
