THE 2 X 4s IN THE PHOTOS ARE NOT ATTACHED TO THE SIGN - THEY ARE WHAT'S LEFT OF THE 'BOX' I BUILT AROUND THE SIGN TO PROTECT THE NEON - I HAD PLYWOOD SCREWED TO THOSE BOARDS - I REMOVED IT FOR THE PHOTOS...

This auction is for an all-original 1940's-1950's Rexall two-sided porcelain neon sign, that I removed from a drug store in Ayden, NC in the late 1980s.  I hauled it back to my shop, and it has been there for the last 20 years.  Now you have the chance to own it.  As you can see from the photos, it does have quite a bit of sawdust on it.  ALL of the original neon is intact - white tubing on the Rexall logo, and clear tubing for 'Edwards' and 'Drugs'.  I believe the clear tubing lights up as red-orange.  I only saw it lit up one time - when we got it back, we stuck the wires that trailed the sign into an extension cord and plugged it in.  It lit briefly and then threw the circuit breaker.  Haven't messed with it since.  In a perfect world, I would have had the thing disassembled, polished, rewired, and hung in my personal museum for me to light up whenever the mood struck me.  As it happens, cruel Fate has seen fit to stick me with this very imperfect world - where I have neither the time nor the means for my museum.  That said - this is an outstanding example of what was once a familiar sight on Main Street America.  Those signs that didn't suffer at the hands of the obtuse scrap collector or indiscriminate wrecking ball, either hung in the weather until decrepit, or disappeared into collections and museums.  The porcelain faces of this sign are in great shape, with bright, vivid colors - one side has rust staining (run-off from the top of the can), but will come off without much effort.  One of the photos (#5) shows a place on the sign where I removed some of the rust stain.  I will tell the winning bidder the perfect way to remove it, to reveal clean, glossy porcelain without damaging the porcelain.  Seriously - there might be one or two tiny chips near the edge of this sign, but nothing in the field.  It's really nice.  Most of the 'can' is in respectable condition; the bottom piece will need repair or replacement, but that's just flat sheet metal.  And, all of the neon is original and intact.  A mark on the bottom of the sign indicates that it weighs 284 lbs. (photo #8).  It measures 50" tall, about 16" wide (including the neon on both sides) and 72" wide, not including the two angle-iron arms that held it perpendicular to the facade of the building.  A neat all-original, untouched, unfooled-around-with piece with lots of character.  Don't miss out.  The winning bidder will have the opportunity to buy an 8' long Rexall script porcelain enamel logo, that came from the same place- it is NOT included in this auction.  There's more cool vintage stuff in my other auctions - check them out!  Thanks for looking, and good luck bidding.

A note:  If the winning bidder wants to ship this sign, that's fine - BUT, I will not be responsible for crating, packing or otherwise preparing this sign to be shipped - that said, the sign can be picked up at ZIP 27858 by the winning bidder, or whomever the winning bidder hires to retrieve this sign, and I will gladly meet them at their convenience to do so, provided they will be responsible for packing the sign for its journey.  Email with questions...

The fine print: all sales are final.  Please ask any questions at least 24 hours before the auction's end, to allow me time to respond.  Please do not ask my reserve, if there is one; or if I'll end the auction early - I won't.  Payment by PayPal is due within 36 hours of receiving my invoice - payment by other methods (write for details) is due four business days after you receive an invoice from me.
