   9.57 GRAMS--900/1000 FINE GOLD

This newly designed gold coin honors the proud heritage of the people of Papua New Guinea. Its obverse portrays four finely sculptured faces, each depicted in the full headdress symbolic of the ceremonial customs of this colorful nation. Each headdress reflects very old and authentic motifs of these artistic people.

The reverse bears the national emblem, which features the bird of paradise with plumage in full display.

As an official monetary coin, "The Faces of Papua New Guinea" can be spent at face value in Papua New Guinea. It contains 9.57 grams of 900/1000 fine gold and was minted with a full Proof finish.

Issued in a special sealed cachet, this coin is a certified First Day of Minting Proof struck on November 6, 1979.

Proofs of this coin were minted in a strictly limited edition. No other Proofs will ever be struck.

Located north of Australia, Papua New Guinea encompasses half of the second largest island in the world and some 600 smaller islands. The new nation, which attained its independence on September 16, 1975, unites the former Territory of Papua and the United Nations Trusteeship of New Guinea.
