SLIDE TOPICS, SUBTOPICS and CONTENTS:

SIGHT ADJUSTMENT AND ZERO
SOTIC

A precise zero of the sniper weapon (SWS) is critical to a sniper because errors at short ranges subtend to far greater errors at increased distances.  Since a sniper deals with greater ranges , his zero of the SWS at short and  long ranges is critical.  It is one of the few variables he can control.  Additionally,  once he detects an error,  he must be able to make the right correction instead of guessing it or bouncing around a target.  This is particularly important  when  correcting for a miss when he only has a short time for a second shot.
ZERO
THE ALIGNMENT OF THE SIGHTS WITH THE BORE OF THE RIFLE SO THE BULLET WILL IMPACT ON THE TARGET AT THE DESIRED POINT OF AIM.
THE WEAPON IS ZEROED WHEN THE SIGHTS AND THE TRAJECTORY COINCIDE DOWN RANGE AT THE POINT OF AIM.
MINUTE OF ANGLE (MOA)
MINUTE OF ANGLE & HOW IT IS IMPORTANT TO THE ART OF SNIPING
MINUTES OF ANGLE MUST BE UNDERSTOOD TO ACHIEVE ZERO
1 MOA IS EQUAL TO 1/60th OF 1 DEGREE OF ARC.  THE MOA ACTS THE SAME AS THE MIL RELATION FORMULA.
EXAMPLE - 1 MIL AT 1000 METERS EQUALS 1 METER, AT 2000 METERS 1 MIL EQUALS 2 METERS.
MOA
A MOA SUBTENDS TO 1.047 INCHES AT 100 YARDS.
LIKE THE MIL, THE MOA SIZE INCREASES UNIFORMLY OVER RANGE, BUT ITS VALUE, AS A MOA  STAYS THE SAME.
EXAMPLE
1 MOA  AT 100 YDS = 1.047 IN
1 MOA  AT 200 YDS = 2.094 IN
MOA
VALUE OF A MOA, WHEN USED IN THE FIELD OR ON THE RANGE, IS -
 1 MOA  = 1 INCH PER 100 YARDS
WHEN USING THIS METHOD, THE ERROR IS LESS THAN 0.5 INCHES AT 1000 YARDS.
MOA
A MOA AT 100 METERS = 2.87 cm
A MOA AT 200 METERS = 5.76 cm
AGAIN ROUNDING PRODUCES
A MOA AT 100 METERS = 3 cm, etc.
AGAIN, THIS ROUNDING CREATS LESS THAN A 1.5 CM ERROR AT 1000 METERS
FINAL FIELD ROUNDING
A MOA AT 100 METERS OR YARDS EQUALS 1 INCH
THIS CAUSES AN ERROR OF SLIGHTLY MORE THAN 0.5 INCHES AT 900 METERS OR 1000 YARDS
DETERMINING TARGET SIZES AT DIFFERENT RANGES
YOU MUST KNOW YOUR TARGET SIZE IN INCHES OR CENTIMETERS TO DETERMINE PRECISE CORRECTIONS FOR YOUR IRON SIGHTS OR OPTICS
TO DETERMINE THE SIZE OF YOUR TARGET IN MOA, YOU MUST SIMPLY KNOW THE SIZE OF YOUR TARGET IN INCHES. DIVIDE THAT VALUE BY THE VALUE OF 1 MOA AT THAT RANGE.
TARGET SIZE IN MOA
E TYPE TARGET IS 19 INCHES WIDE, ITS PLACED OUT AT 500 METERS
19/5 = 3.8 MOA WIDE
TARGET SIZE IS 36 INCHES HIGH AT 600 METERS
36/6 = 6 MOA HIGH
THE MIL
MILS FUNCTION THE SAME AS MOA
1 MIL EQUALS 3.375 MOA
AGAIN ROUNDING ALLOWS FOR:
1 MIL EQUALS 3.5 MOA
THIS CAUSES AN ERROR OF SLIGHTLY MORE THAN 1.0 INCH AT 900 METERS OR 1000 YARDS
MILS
REMEMBER, 3.5 IS IN THE FIELD - WRITTEN           1 MIL = 3.375!
TO DETERMINE TARGET SIZE IN MILS, YOU MUST KNOW THE TARGET WIDTH IN MOA.
TO DETERMINE WIDTH IN MILS SIMPLY DIVIDE THE TARGET WIDTH IN MOA BY 3.375
FBI TARGET IS 3.8 MOA WIDE AT 500 YDS
3.8 / 3.375 = 1.125 MILS WIDE
TO ZERO YOU MUST GROUP!!!
UNDERSTANDING MOAs AND MILs IS IMPORTANT
YOU MUST ALSO UNDERSTAND GROUPING
ASSESS & ANALYZE A GROUP:
GROUPING IS DEPENDENT ON SEVERAL FACTORS.
SHOOTERS ABILITY TO GROUP (MOST IMPORTANT)
AMMUNITION
GUN
ENVIROMENTAL CONDITIONS
MEAN POINT OF IMPACT
YOU MUST DETERMINE THE MEAN POINT OF IMPACT (MPI) OF A GROUP. THIS IS THE POINT THAT IS THE CENTER OF ALL SHOTS, EXCLUDING CALLED FLYERS.
A CALLED FLYER IS WHEN YOU CALL THE FLYER IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE SHOT, NOT AFTER YOU SEE THE TARGET.
A TRUE GROUP MUST CONSIST OF A MINIMUM OF 5 ROUNDS
100 ROUNDS IS THE “STANDARD”

SHOT GROUP POTENTIAL
.5 MOA GUN + .5 MOA AMMO + .5 MOA SHOOTER = ?
(.5 X .5) + (.5 X .5) + (.5 X .5) = .75
SQUARE ROOT OF .75 = .866 MEAN MOA
REASON FOR MANY UNCALLED FLYERS
CALL EACH SHOOT
THIS WAY YOU WON’T BE ANNALYZING A PULLED SHOT AS PART OF YOUR GROUP.
SIGHT CORRECTIONS
WHAT YOU MUST KNOW BEFORE YOU CAN MAKE A SIGHT CORRECTION
VALUE OF EACH CLICK / ADJUSTMENTS ON IRONS OR OPTICS
SIZE OF TARGET IN INCHES OR CENTIMETERS
THE EXACT RANGE TO THE TARGET
MPI OF YOUR GROUP
FORMULA
TO DETERMINE THE NUMBER OF MOA TO CORRECT, YOU MUST SIMPLY DIVIDE THE NUMBER OF INCHES OF ERROR OR CORRECTION BY THE VALUE OF ONE MOA AT THAT RANGE
INCHES OF ERROR / TARGET RANGE, NEAREST HUNDRETH OR THE VALUE OF ONE MOA IN INCHES AT TGT RNG.  =  MOA CORRECTION
10 IN / 200M =     10/2 = 5 MOA
15 IN / 500M =     15/5 = 3 MOA
DETERMINING CLICKS
TO DETERMINE THE NUMBER OF CLICKS ON YOUR SIGHTS . YOU MUST KNOW THE VALUE OF EACH CLICK
PALMA - 1/4 MOA PER CLICK OF WINDAGE AND ELEVATION.   = 4 CLICKS PER  MOA
M3A - 1 MOA ELEVATION, 1/2 MOA ON WINDAGE
M3 -  1 MOA  ELEVATION AND WINDAGE
M1A - 1/4 MOA ELEVATION AND WINDAGE
M21 - 1 MOA ELEVATION AND 1/2 MOA WINDAGE
REDFIELD PALM REAR SIGHT
1 CLICK OF WINDAGE OR ELEVATION KNOBS IS 1/4 MOA
ONE COMPLETE TURN OF THE WINDAGE OR ELEVATION IS EQUAL IS 12 CLICKS OR 3 MOA
THE WINDAGE KNOB HAS A TOTAL OF 36 MOA OF MOVEMENT
TOTAL FOR ELEVATION IS 60 MOA
ZEROING THE IRON SIGHTS
ZEROING THE IRON SIGHTS
SLIP THE SCALES ON THE ELEVATION AND WINDAGE SO THE SCALES READ ZERO
DO NOT SLIP THE KNOB SCALES ON THE SWC WEAPONS, YOU CAN LOSE THE BALL BEARINGS INSIDE THE KNOBS AND CONSTANT SLIPPING WEARS OUT THE POST AND SCREWS
 READING THE IRON SIGHTS

WINDAGE AND ELEVATION KNOBS
THE KNOBS CAN ALSO BE USED TO READ THE SCALE
EACH REVOLUTION EQUALS 3 MOA
THE KNOBS ARE MARKED 0, 1, AND 2
THEN BACK TO ZERO
THERE ARE THREE MARKS BETWEEN EACH NUMBER
THE MARKS EQUAL .25 MOA
ADJUSTMENT KNOBS
FRONT POST SIGHT
ZEROING OPTICS
FIRST YOU MUST FOCUS THE RETICLE TO YOUR EYE USING THE RETICLE ADJUSTMENT ON THE OCCULAR LENS CASE.
NEXT YOU ADJUST OUT PARALLEX FOR THE RANGE THAT YOU ARE ZEROING THE WEAPON.
ZEROING OPTICS
PROCEDURES FOR ZEROING THE OPTICS NEXT ARE THE SAME AS WITH THE IRON SIGHTS
THE DIFFERENCE IS THAT THE ELEVATION KNOB “CLICKS” ARE IN 1 MOA ADJUSTMENTS, WHILE THE WINDAGE IS IN .5 MOA ADJUSTMENTS
M24 RETICLE
THE RETICLE HAS .75 MOA DOTS ON THE CROSS HAIRS
THIS IS WHAT DISTINGUISHES THE THREE QUARTER MIL DOT RETICLE
THE DOTS ARE 1 MIL FROM CENTER TO CENTER OR CROSS HAIR TO CENTER
THE CROSS HAIR IS ONE FIFTH MOA NOMINAL IN THICKNESS
