Cubic Zirconia was developed a making method by Russian scientists, it is dubbed the "skull method" because of the resemblance of the container to a human skull.  The zirconium oxide powder is highly refractory by using stabilizers, the scientists were able to crystallize the zirconia in clear, transparent masses with a cubic structure.  It is made in a wide variety of colours: yellow, brown, pink, lavender, blue, ect. to white colourless.  There is no more closest imitation of diamond than cubic zirconia.  Its hardness is 81/2, and refractive index between 2.15 and 2.2.
