Synopsis
A five-year-old boy thinks his body is falling apart untill he learns new teeth grow and hair and skin replace themselves.
The young narrator of this book is horrified to discover that he's coming apart--piece by piece. Luckily, his parents are able to reassure him that such things as fuzz in his bellybutton, skin peeling off his toes, and losing teeth are all normal parts of life. Watercolor and colored pencil illustrations accompany the rhyming text.

Industry reviews
"This hovers attractively on the edge of disgusting, and kids will get a kick out of the sum of these parts."

These are 6 books by Tedd Arnold (one with text by Brod Bagert), funny picture books for ages 4-8 approx.  Books are all new, 5 are softcovers from Puffin publishers, size 8 x 9" to 8 x11", 32p each, $5.99-6.99 cover prices, one a Scholastic softcover edition $3.99, publisher's remainder mark on all on book bottom edge by spine, not visible on covers or opened pages.

  1. Parts. From Booklist:  The poetry doesn't quite scan, but that's more than balanced by Arnold's unusual topic and his hilarious illustrations. A pop-eyed youngster is having a hard time. He seems to be falling apart. After losing a few hairs, he thinks he's going bald; his belly button lint is his stuffing coming out; "a chunk of something gray and wet" from his nose is none other than a piece of his brain; and a loose tooth puts him into shock. "Quite soon I'll be in pieces in / A pile without a shape. / Thank goodness Dad keeps lots and lots / And lots of masking tape." The gross factor is a key ingredient here, with Arnold exploiting it nicely in bold, comical illustrations that catch the full-blown anxieties of the imaginative narrator. When Mom and Dad intervene, little boy and audience alike breathe a sigh of relief. A zany, ultimately reassuring take on something that may indeed be a child's bugaboo.

  3. No Jumping on the Bed
  4. Hi Fly Guy, Scholastic edition, Theodor Seuss Geisel Honor Book, early reader
  5. Giant Children.  Poems by Brod Bagert, illustrations by Tedd Arnold. From Publishers Weekly:  This deliciously over-the-top poetry collection explores the nerve-wracking world of school-age children. The narrator of the opening titular poem is the classroom hamster: "Pages turn at giant speed/ As giant children learn to read." Bagert's (Chicken Socks: And Other Contagious Poems) uncomplicated style of verse addresses such diverse topics as sibling feuds and wild imaginations, monster trucks and the Tooth Fairy, as it humorously handles the more anxious side of growing up, including the mixed blessing of landing the lead in the school play. Arnold's signature style seems particularly well suited to the stage-frightened fellow waiting in the wings ("So here I am on stage,/ And the play's about to start./ My life was so much simpler/ Before I got this part"). The squiggling lines seem to indicate the actor's nerves gone haywire. Bagert delivers the requisite gross-out with "Booger Love" (complete with warning label that the poem "not, under any circumstances, be recited to a grown-up!"). The characters' pop-eyes sitting atop oversize heads help express the ever-changing emotions of childhood. Arnold selects just the right moment in each poem to dramatize and his exaggerated portraits help readers focus on the hyperbole of the poetry. A funny peek at the pleasures and (growing) pains of childhood. Ages 4-8.
  6. Green Wilma.  From Publishers Weekly: There's something decidedly odd about Wilma: at breakfast, her parents are startled by their offspring's request to "Pass the bugs"; later, she shocks her teacher by snagging a "tasty little fly" with her long pink tongue. Most noticeably, however, Wilma's skin has turned a deep, froggy green, a fact that her polka-dot T-shirt and beribboned blond hair cannot conceal. In this strange and gleeful story, it's surprisingly easy being green--the extraordinary heroine is the envy of her elementary-school class. Arnold's rhyming text is as buoyant as his leaf-colored, rubbery-limbed protagonist; his roly-poly, bug-eyed characters perfectly suit the story's quirky theme and manic action. Squiggly, threadlike lines--suggestive of handmade paper--cover every surface in the richly colored illustrations, subtly adding an unusual softness and depth. Though some youngsters may be puzzled by the book's conclusion, this gifted picture book creator ( No Jumping on the Bed! ; The Signpainter's Assistant ) has taken his talents in a quirky, unconventional direction with this tale, which takes daydreaming to new and zany heights. Ages 4-8. A Children's BOMC selection.
