ART TODAY
authors Ray Faulkner, Stanford University, Edwin Ziegfeld, Teachers' College, Columbia University published by Holt,Rinehart and Winston, 5th Edition, 1st printing 1969, 542 pages, hardcover with dust jacket, 9x11.5"
Oversize vintage hardcover with dust jacket. Overall condition is very good. Book has oatmeal cloth covered boards with a Frank Stella design embossed on front. Clean with extremely light wear (boards really look almost new). Corners lightly curved in. Front and rear endpapers and fly leaves are dark blue, pages are tight and clean, I see no writing, highlighting or marking other than price stamped on title page. Dust jacket has overall mild tanning and rubbing getting a bit heavier near the edges. A few light, small marks, mild edgewear except for a 1 inch tear at the bottom crease of the front flap.
From the dust jacket:
"ART Today is a survey of the visual arts of our time-from household design and community planning, through industrial design and the major crafts, to painting, sculpture, and architecture. It is an analysis of the brilliant panorama of the arts today and of their significance for contemporary life and culture.
The central theme and interest of ART TODAY is modern art, but to do justice to the extraordinary plurality of visual expression in the twentieth century, the authors have developed an eclectic approach that considers historical precedent and the materials and processes that designers, craftsmen, and artists have employed to give visual form to their ideas. While seeking always the artists motivations and points of view ART TODAY aims at the same time to stimulate readers to play active and informed roles in shaping their own environments.
ART TODAY is illustrated by approximately 700 art works, the great majority of which represent the vision and genius of this generation of creative talent. Some 72 works are reproduced in full color. The black-and-white illustrations are printed in gravure, a process that makes possible the maximum range of fidelity in the reproduction of halftone values, from deep, rich black to the most delicate details of line and shadow. Both black-and-white and color illustrations are closely integrated with the text, a design feature that is rare among heavily illustrated art books."
