Actor Dick Jones:
This rare fanzine / Hollywood magazine presents detailed information about
the life and career of Western actor Dick Jones (born 1927), who is also
remembered as the original voice of Pinocchio, in the 1940 Walt Disney movie
of that same name.
Dick Jones was a popular actor in B-Westerns and in television. Jones was
an accomplished horseman, stuntman, and trick rider.
Jones was born in Snyder, Texas, in Scurry County. By age four, he was billed
as the "World's Youngest Trick Rider and Trick Roper". By age six,
he was hired to do riding and lariat tricks in the rodeo owned by Western
star Hoot Gibson. During this time he was known as Dickie Jones.
Early in his career, Jones appeared as a bit player in several of the Hal
Roach Our Gang (Little Rascals) shorts.
In 1940 he was the voice of Pinocchio in Walt Disney's animated film
Pinocchio. Jones attended Hollywood High School. At age 15, he
took over the role of Henry Aldrich on the hit radio show "The Aldrich Family".
In World War II, he served in the Army in Alaska.
Western cowby Gene Autry cast Jones in Westerns in film and television, produced
by Autry's Flying A Pictures production company. In the early 1950s, he starred
in the Range Rider TV show as Dick West, sidekick to the "The Range Rider"
Dick Mahoney, which ran for 76 episodes. In 1955 Gene Autry gave Jones
his own series, "Buffalo Bill, Jr." which ran for 40 episodes on NBC.
Dick Jones was one of the few Western actors who did his own stunt work.
In 1957, Jones appeared twice as "Ned" in the American Civil War series Gray
Ghost, with Tod Andrews. In 1960, starred in an episodoe of The Blue
Angels, about the elite air-show squadron of the United States Navy. In 1962,
he appeared in the western series Wagon Train starring John McIntire.
He also appeared in the television short The Night Rider starring
Johnny Cash and Eddie Dean.
In 2000, Dick Jones was named a Disney Legend, for doing the voice of Pinocchio
in the 1940 movie.
