With the new firmware included on the CD-ROM, users can now boost the
power on their WRT54G/GL/GS's to 251mW and share their connection with
others. Ideal for not only the home but business as well.
But all of the new firmware that is coming out is not only just to boost the power
on the WRT54G's. For example, the DD-WRT firmware included with the
CD-ROM allows you to create your own Hotspot-in-a-Box. The Linksys
Routers can also be used as a Repeater or for Bridging (see the link
below).
The Wall Mount Bracket included with the Kit allows you to mount your Wireless Router outside.
Easy to mount the 7.0dBi Magnetic Mount Antennas outside on metal or nonmetal surface!

Our friends in this Wi-Fi apartment are able to easily share their Internet connection with others in the neighborhood.
************* The Linksys Stacking/Wall Mount Bracket that comes with this Kit
allows you to mount your Linksys networking device securely on the wall
either inside your home or outside. Mount your wireless devices up high
for optimum signal coverage, or use it to get your wired networking
components off your desk and out of your way. The Stacking/Wall Mount
Bracket can also be used to securely stack Linksys compact components
on top of standard-sized ones. Its feet mate to the top of a
standard-sized device, while depressions on the bracket accept the
foot-spacing of the smaller cases.
Unfortunately in some cases you can't tell what version of the router
is inside the Linksys WRT54G/GL/GS box. Here's a helpful table. The first
three letters and number in the Serial Number on the Back of the Box
will tell you what version is inside:

Source: FCC Certification Test Reports and Manufacturer Spec Sheets Additions to the Tables above: The Linksys WRT54G v. 8.0 (CDFF, CDFG), Broadcom BCM5354KFBG Chipset, 8/2 RAM/FLASH ROM, Transmit Power: 112mW (b)& 115mW (g), with NO REMOVABLE Antennas (see photo below). The Linksys WRT54GS v. 7.0 (CGNA, CGNB, CGNC), Broadcom BCM5352EKPBG Chipset, 16/2 RAM/FLASH ROM, Transmit Power: 135mW (b) & 135mW (g), WITH REMOVABLE antennas (see photo below). The Linksys WRT54GS v. 7.2 (CGNE) is identical to v. 7.0 but does NOT have the removable antennas. We suspect this will be the last version of the Linksys WRT54GS units as well as the WRT54G units as the newer Linksys routers are now coming on the market: WRT54G2, WRT110, WRT310N. All of the newer units have built-in antennas and we are not aware of any DD-WRT firmware support as of this writing (see photo's below).
All three units, Linksys WRT54G v. 8.0 (CDFF, CDFG) and the Linksys WRT54GS v. 7.0 (CGNB, CGNC) and Linksys WRT54GS v. 7.2 (CGNE) are supported but require a special flashing procedure.
The Linksys WRT54G v. 8.0 (CDFF, CDFG) requires the VXWorksKillerGV8. bin file (included on the CD-ROM) and the DD-WRT.v24 micro wrt54gv8. bin file (also included on the CD-ROM). For directions on flashing the Linksys WRT54G v. 8.0 (CDFF, CDFG) click here.
The Linksys WRT54GS v. 7.0 (CGNB, CGNC) and Linksys WRT54GS v. 7.2 (CGNE) require the VXWorksKillerGSv7-v3. bin file (included on the CD-ROM) and DD-WRT.v24 micro wrt54gv8. bin file (also included on the CD-ROM; note the DD-WRT Micro Builds Firmware are the same for both of the units; only the VXWorksKiller files are different). For directions on flashing the Linksys WRT54GS v. 7.0 (CGNB, CGNC) and the Linksys WRT54GS v. 7.2 (CGNE) click here.
Best Bet WRT54G: Purchase
the Linksys WRT54G Wireless Routers versions 1.0-4.0 which are
supported by 3rd Party Firmware. Versions 5 and 6 are supported by
DD-WRT Micro Builds but require special flashing procedures. The WRT54G
v. 7 is not supported by 3rd Party Firmware, but notice from the Table
above that the Transmit Power has nearly tripled from previous models
(228mW @ 802.11b and 237mW @ 802.11g). That may be good news for those
who are not interested in installing 3rd Party Firmware to push the
Transmit Power up to 251mW.
Best Bet WRT54GS:
Purchase the Linksys WRT54GS SpeedBooster Routers, Versions 1.0-4.0
which are supported by 3rd Party Firmware. Like the WRT54G, Versions 5
and 6 are supported by DD-WRT Micro Builds but require special flashing
procedures. For more information on installing the Micro Builds for
Verions 5 and 6 of the WRT54G/GS units click here.
WRT54GL (CL7A, CL7B) is Linux based with 16 MB RAM and 4 MB Flash ROM. DD-WRT Firmware is available for this unit and is an exact replica of the WRT54G v. 4 unit.
WRTSL54GS (CJK0) is also Linux based but with 32 MB RAM and 8 MB Flash ROM a
266Mhz Processor and USB 2.0 port for network storage. Check
Brainslayer's site for his new release of DD-WRT firmware for this
unit. This unit does NOT have a removable antenna.
Other Linksys Wireless Products: We included four other Linksys wireless products just for your interest
Linksys Wireless-G Access Point (WAP54G), Linksys Wireless-G Compact
Router (WRT54GC; two versions), Linksys Wireless-G Range Expander
(WRE54G). Reviewing the FCC Reports we note the rather low Transmit Power of these units. For example, we would have thought the Linksys Range Expander would have more Transmit Power than 26mW (b) and 41mW (g).
Linksys N-Wireless Routers (older versions): Linksys WRT150N, 264 MHz, 16/4 RAM/Flash ROM, Transmit Power (stock): 75mW (b), 176mW (g); Linksys WRT300N, 264 MHz, 32/4, Transmit Power (stock): 79mW (b), 125mW (g); WRT350N, 300 MHz, 32/8, Transmit Power (stock): 102mW (b), 112mW (g). The bad news: None of these units have detachable antennas. The good news: All three of the units can be flashed with the DD-WRT v. 24 beta firmware. (See photo's below)
BEST Kept Secret: You are probably wanting to know why the Buffalo High Power Turbo G Wireless Router (WHR-HP-G54)
was included in Table 1. In our testing of this unit we have been
impressed with the wireless coverage this router offers. The stock Transmit
Power is awesome: 284mW (802.11b) and 380mW (802.11g).
The unit supports WDS, in fact, you can daisy chain as many as 6
different units (although 4 is recommended) to bridge/repeat your
wireless signal throughout your home, place of business, or even your
castle. The unit supports DD-WRT Firmware and has a removable RP-SMA
Antenna. Simply delicious!
What's even more delicious! When you flash the Buffalo High Power Turbo G Wireless Router with DD-WRT v.23 SP2 you can increase the Transmit Power to 722mW. We now have the Buffalo High Power Turbo G Wireless Router (WHR-HP-G54) for sale in our eBay Store along with the Buffalo WLI-CB-G54 PC Card with an external antenna.
Linksys WRT54G/GS/GL Firmware
Why is all this cool firmware available for the WRT54G/GS and other Linksys Products?
The Linux software that runs the WRT54G/GS routers (actually it is
embedded in a chip made by Broadcom for use in Linksys Routers and
Access Points) is distributed under the the GNU General Public License
(GPL) which the Free Software Foundation created in 1991. Under the
license, if you distribute GPL software in a product, you must also
distribute the software's source code. In other words, when an
organization or company uses open source software under the GNU General
Public License (GPL), instead of paying a licensing fee, it is required
to make that code -- and any "derivative" works they have created --
available to the public for free. Linksys and Broadcom have done just
that (with pressure from the general public and the Free Sofware
Foundation.) What we see now is a nice selection of free firmware to
use with our Linksys Routers and Access Points (thanks of course to all
of the firmware developers). You can now easily download the source
code for various Linksys Products including the WRT54G/GS at the Linksys GPL Code Center.
CD-ROM Firmware.
The 3rd Party Firmware included on the CD-ROM all have the capability
of boosting the Transmit Power on the WRT54G/GL/GS units (most
versions) from 28mw to 251mw. The most stable is DD-WRT v.23 SP2 although we have currently installed DD-WRT v.24 beta in many of our units and have found the 6.20.07 build to be very stable.
If you are wanting to connect multiple WRT54G/GS/GL routers here are a couple of step-by-step links. Click here
if you have DD-WRT v.23 SP2 installed on your unit. For those with
DD-WRT v.24 installed, the DD-WRT Tutorials written by Aaron Weiss from
Wi-Fi Planet are very helpful. Aaron has written 5 Tutorials on
how to take advantage of the various features available on BrainSlayers
DD-WRT Firmware. Click on DD-WRT v.24 Tutorial 5: Wireless Repeater to get started. Scroll down to the bottom for links to Tutorials 1-4. Great writing.
Also, BrainSlayer has step-by-step instructions on using your unit as a repeater with DD-WRT v.24 beta installed (see photo below). For step-by-step instructions, click here.

to learn how Linksys owners
are tinkering with their Access Points and Routers to boost the
broadcasting power and adding additional features which are very nice.
Something new is always cookin' in the Forums.
WARNING: You risk damaging the unit
(blowing the Broadcom Chip) by installing the firmware. We have
installed firmware onto 100's of these units and have not destroyed one
single router. If you are not an experienced Wi-Fi user it is best for
you to leave the original Linksys firmware installed on the WRT54GS. If
you happen to "brick" your unit click on the BrainSlayers WRT54G/GS Revival Guide for help. All of the Forums mentioned above have help available.
