    This One Hundred Kina Cold Coin is the first gold coin of Papua New Guinea and commemorates the day, September 16, 1975, that Papua New Guinea became an independent sovereign nation.
     
    As an official monetary coin, it can be spent at face value in the new nation. It measures 27.70mm in diameter and contains 9.57 grams of 900/1000 fine gold. The coin was minted with a full proof finish.
     
    One side of this historic coin depicts the Bird of Paradise ? the official national symbol of Papua New Guinea ? together with the five stars of the Southern Cross, just as they appear on the national flag. The other side of the coin bears a portrait of the Honourable Michael Somare, the first Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea.
     
    The independent nation of Papua New Guinea unites the former Territory of Papua and the Unit-ed-Nations Trusteeship of New Guinea. It is located north of Australia, on the second largest island in the world, and includes some 600 islands of the Eastern Archipelago.
     
    Issued in a special sealed cachet, this One Hundred Kina Gold Coin of Papua New Guinea is a certified First Day of Minting Proof struck on September 16, 1975. Proofs of this coin were minted in strictly limited edition by The Franklin Mint. No other proofs of this coin will ever be minted again.
