AN ANCIENT STORY
states
that in present day Argentina, a large rock fell from sky, giving name to this area
Piguem Noralta / "Field of the Sky",
translated as
"Campo del Cielo"
by the Conquistadors, who recovered large pieces of meteorite from the area as early as 1576. The impact some 6000 years ago created 12 small craters with diameters of up to 200m; the craters form a narrow line oriented roughly from northeast to southwest with an unusually elongated distribution in a 17 km linear extent, along which meteoritic material has been found. Campo del Cielo displays an attractive array of jumbled nickel-iron crystals quite unlike the pattern seen in other types of iron meteorites.
Look at this great set of fridge magnets!
