6500 K Daylight Simply Looks Brighter!
This is for good physiological reasons! Under the lower light levels found indoors, the brain uses both the rods and the cones of the eye. And the rods are much more sensitive to the higher energy blue wavelengths found in daylight. This was first discovered by the Czech scientist Perkinje. One empirical relationship* has found that 6500K light is perceived to be 40% brighter than standard 4000K lights.

Fewer Shadows & More Even Lighting
Longer 8’ fixtures spread light out better than shorter 4’ fixtures or metal halide point sources. Three of these fixtures replace two standard 400 watt metal halide fixtures. Fluorescents inherently give more even lighting, so they don’t have to be mounted at high heights to achieve uniform illumination.
It Shines light in hard to reach places: Wheel Wells, Work Benches, Shelving, Under Hoods. One of the toughest places to light is the perimeter of a building. While the central portion of a building is illuminated by contributions from many light fixtures, the area near the walls is only effectively lighted by nearby fixtures. Plus often your back is to the fixtures, blocking light and making shadows. And when you pull a vehicle in next to a wall, the overhead lighting is blocked all together.
For this reason, I most often mount 8’ fixtures directly on the wall. The fixtures are tipped to point in. So light shines down on work benches and diagonally onto vertical surfaces. We make special brackets to do this. But, you can also hang the fixtures from the ceiling with chain and tip them using an offset chain bail. This lets you aim light where needed.

It uses 228 Less Watts! That‘s a $410 energy savings per fixture over the life of a set of T8 bulbs. (Assumes e=$.1/Kwhr and 18Khr bulb life) Most often these are used to replace standard metal halide fixtures. The output of the bulbs is actually a little less, but due to the Perkinje effect, use of daylight tubes will make the fixture look brighter. Why build a shop with high walls to pull in tall equipment to work on if your light fixtures are in the way? This fixture consumes the least amount of head room, so it keeps above doors and other obstructions
It’s Often the Easiest to Install. Eight foot fixtures are really easy to surface mount right on the ceiling with the fixture itself serving as the wire way. Because of heat build up concerns, fluorescent hi-bay fixtures (ie 4’ fixtures with 4-6 bulbs across) are usually not rated to be surface mounted. They must be hung down at least 4 inches. So with hi-bay fluorescents and metal halide fixtures, you often waste time and money with the extra expense of putting in junction boxes, extra conduit, receptacles and plugs.
Natural White Light Makes Everything Better
The best new lighting simulates Sunshine. Many studies have correlated academic performance with natural lighting.
Studies at elementary schools in Wetaskiwin, Alberta by Dr. Harry Wohlfarth show higher combined academic and IQ test scores attributable to full spectrum lighting. (The International Journal of Biosocial Research, 5 no.1,6 no. 1,7 no. 1)
In 1981, Wohlfarth and Cathrine Sam conducted a studied children with severe behavior problems and physical handicaps at Elves Memorial Child Development Center (Edmonton, Alberta). Both room colors and lighting was changed. Systolic blood pressure was reduced 20 points and children were less aggressive. When cool white tubes were reinstalled, blood pressure went up and behavior problems resurfaced.
In another study, Dr. Fritz Hollwich examined stress levels as measured by the stress hormones ACTH and cortisol. This hormones were present in substantial quantities in individuals sitting under cool white lights but absent from those sitting under sunlight simulating fluorescents.
Similar research was conducted in the UK and reported by The Lancet, the British Medical Journal.
It’s true that daylight simulating light is not needed to suppress the excessive meletonin hormone that causes SAD. But people feel better under natural lighting. And there is a substantial hormonal basis to understand why.
These Nice lights don’t turn PINK!
Take a close look at older (non pulse start) metal halide fixtures! They color shift to make PINK light as the bulbs age! Yuck!
In his classic book, Health and Light, Dr. John N.Ott recounts totally bizarre effects of pink light. Apparently pink light will wreck the sex life of a mink. In a scientific study, ninety percent of male mink exposed to continuous pink light were experimentally found to be sexually “non-working” and female mink required pregnant mare serum hormone shots to achieve pregnancy. Four pink mink died prematurely due to a strange malady and the pink treated mink also become aggressive.
Questionnaires given to college students indicated that there might be a link between wearing pink tinted sunglasses and emotional disturbances. Based upon this research, John Ott recommended to the Kansas City Royals that players switch from pink tinted to medium gray glasses. The director Syd Thrift wrote back to John Ott “It was amazing to observe how the player was changed from a hyper-aggressive and helmet-throwing player to a very relaxed, confident person”, pg 116, Health and Light.
But you don't have to be in the pink!
Use Natural full spectrum lighting instead. At 6500K, our T5 bulbs are the brightest around! They generate crisp white light that makes standard 4100K or even 5000K bulbs look yellow!
