A VERY RARE LOT OF AMERICAN BOOKPLATES (EX-LIBRIS) FROM THE 19TH – 20TH CENTURY. THIS VINTAGE LOT CONTAINS 8 ILLUSTRATED BLACK & WHITE BOOKPLATES IN SEVERAL SIZES.
DETAILS THE BOOKPLATES:
1. EX-LIBRIS OF MARY SCOTT TOWNSEND. ENTITLED: "GAUDIA MAGNA NUNCIO". SIZE: 3.2X4 INCH. Mary Scott Townsend, the daughter of William L. Scott, a Pennsylvania railroad and coal magnate who became a member of Congress. As an heiress to his fortune, she was a woman of great wealth. She became one of Washington's social leaders, known for her elegant entertaining.
2. EX-LIBRIS OF FREDERICK SEGMOUR CLARKE. ENTITLED: "SI BENE FACIAS NILMETUAS". SIZE: 2.4X3.6.
3. EX-LIBRIS OF JOSEPH GREGG LAYNE. ENTITLED: "E'EN DO BOT SPAIR NOCHT" SIZE: 2.8X3.7 INCH. Joseph Gregg Layne (1885-1952) was a leading authority and bibliographer of Californiana as well as president, member of the board of directors and editor of the Quarterly for the Historical Society of Southern California.
4. EX-LIBRIS OF JAMES HAZEN HYDE. SIZE: 2.5X3.2 INCH. James Hazen Hyde (1876-1959), was the son of Henry Baldwin Hyde. Henry Baldwin Hyde, (1834-1899), founded The Equitable Life Assurance Society of the United States in 1859, It became, by the year of Hyde's death, the largest life insurance company in the world. Hyde sought to guarantee that his son James Hazen Hyde would continue the family’s control of the company after his death, James Hazen Hyde was twenty-three when he inherited the majority shares in the billion-dollar Equitable Life Assurance Society in 1899. Five years later, at the pinnacle of social and financial success, he made one fatal miscalculation, and set in motion the first great Wall Street scandal of the twentieth century. James Hazen Hyde was second vice-president of the Equitable Society in 1899.
