Digital Express recently started selling on eBay, but has been transferring 8mm film to DVD for the past 4 years. We decided to expand our services through eBay auctions, to improve our exposure in the film transfer business, and to gain new customers with hopes of earning your trust and future business.
Many people have said, I have boxes of these films and have no idea what's on them. I purchased a movie projector in hopes of watching my films to choose the reels I wanted to put on DVD only to discover the projector didn't work. It would be great if I had a way to preview the films before transferring to DVD or a way to determine in what order I wanted them transferred. So why spend all that extra money on old movie technology that no longer works properly and could damage your films beyond repair or transfer. Have your 8mm film transferred to an express video at $2.95 per 50 ft. reel for previewing before you make the transfer to DVD. Want to preview your films to get them in the right order to transfer to DVD, and want the express video for putting up on your own family website, get it all for $9.95 per 50 ft. reel.
Already know what's on your 8mm films, just want them transferred to DVD without any preview. Get our special price at $8.95 per 50 ft. reel. That's only $0.179 cents per foot.

Pre-Production (working with your film)
Film is cleaned to remove any dirt or ground-in particles providing a better picture scan. Film is lubricated with a special film chemical for smoother frame transfer and better quality picture. Film splices are repaired if required allowing for less stress to the film during transfer. True frame by frame progressive image scanning of your film at 525 lines, 60 fields NTSC at the highest standard definition resolution of 720 x 486 pixels. Each frame of film is now an individual digital frame of video sequentially lined up one after another and stored as an uncompressed digital video (AVI) file ready for export into our computer-based editing system.
Post-Production (your film/s is put back on it's original reel and stored in a safe place)
Video editing Because home movies from the past were shot at a variety of speeds, we must set the speed of the video to 29.97 fps for use in the NTSC television standard. With the total frame discretion that comes from TRUE, frame-by-frame scanning, accurate playback rates are determined and applied to the video.
Video is then compressed using the WM Video V9 codec and saved as a (.wmv windows media video) digital video file called an express video. The express video will be available to you as an online preview and download. The Frame size is 240x180, one third the resolution of fullscreen video, has a streaming bit rate of 180kbps, and are viewable with Windows Media Player 9 and above.
After viewing your express video you have the option of selecting which film reel if any that you would like to put on a DVD at a reduced price of only $6.95 per 50 ft. (3 inch) film reel, calculated at $0.139 cents per foot. The option to do this must be done within 10 days once the preview is placed online for your viewing , due to the storage constraints of keeping your original scanned video files on our video storage drives. After 10 days, if you do not contact us, the original digital video files will be deleted from our systems.
The section below only applies to customers that are purchasing a regular 8mm or super 8 film transfer to DVD.
Removal of any clear or black film footage from the video file. Video is then computer enhanced for; correct white balance (color correction), and any over or under-exposed areas of the film. Subtitles are created for each film reel video. An edited uncompressed digital video (AVI) file of your film is created. At this point your digital video file is of better quality than the original film/s you sent in for transfer.
Audio editing If you have an Audio CD that you would like to use for the background music, just send it along with your films and let us know which songs to use. If you don't have any music, we will provide you with music from The O'Neill Brothers with OVER 300 beautiful, instrumental, royalty-free songs available for your background music. The complete edited uncompressed digital audio/video (AVI) file of your film and background music is created and exported for DVD creation.
Final-Production (creation of the DVD)
Import the (AVI) file and encoded to a High-Quality (MPEG-2) video file. Up to two (2) hours of film footage can be authored to the DVD disc. Main Title and Menu created. Chapter placement and Chapter Menus created. Authoring of the Movie, Menus, and Music to a standard 4:3 fullscreen Hollywood Style NTSC DVD, playable on the vast majority of set top DVD players in use today. We record to a 4.7 GB single layer Verbatim DVD-R DVD disc. Custom designed Photo Quality High Resolution DVD disc label is created and printed directly on the DVD disc. The finished disc is put in a Amaray DVD Case - The case is made of a soft, dark gray, plastic with a transparent outer jacket, behind the jacket is your custom designed and printed Photo Quality High Resolution label jacket insert.

Tell me more about the Express Video?
8mm Movie Film to 'Express Video' - Once we have scanned your silent 8mm film or super 8 film to a digital video (.avi) file, it can be used to create a digital movie file called an "Express Video". The express video is produced for viewing with Windows Media Player 9 and above, a (.wmv) movie extension. You can download the express video file to your computer or view it online. To see if you can view an express video click here.
The express video is limited to a frame size of 240x180, that's about one third the resolution of a fullscreen video and has a streaming bit rate of 180kbps. These movies have been optimized for web viewing with increased compression, and lowered bit rates that are used for streaming video over the internet. Actual DVD quality would be much higher.
We do not computer enhance any of the express video or add any music, it is the raw scanned video footage of your 8mm film with frame rate correction only (plays at the right speed). The express video is designed specifically for previewing your film. The average file size of the express video is around 5MB per each 50 ft. film. High speed internet connection recommended.
If you want to send in a bunch of films to determine what to name them or which 8mm or super 8 films you want transferred to dvd or just want them like they are this would be your best savings. We will put these express videos up on our website, on a special page for your eyes only for viewing or downloading. If you are going to have a DVD video produced of these selected express videos, select which videos you want and get our special price of $6.95 per 50ft. film reel. That's only $0.139 per foot.
The price is $2.95 for one (3 inch) film reel up to 50 ft. of silent 8mm film or super 8mm film. Playtime is approx. 3.5 minutes in length. If you have larger reels of 8mm or super 8 film you can multiply your total footage by $0.059 cents per foot to get a total cost.
Our method of scanning 8mm or super 8 movie film
At Digital Express we provide TRUE frame-by-frame, advanced 3CCD progressive scan imaging of both regular 8mm and super 8mm film to DVD NTSC video delivering stunning picture quality, highly accurate color reproduction, and a 100 % flicker free transfer. Transferring frame-by-frame ensures 100% frame accuracy for correct playback speed and the sharpest picture quality. We capture the film image off the emulsion side of the film through an enlarged film gate which allows us access to 100% of the film frame in 4:3 standard format. We can also capture your films in widescreen 16:9 format, but some of the picture will be cropped above and below the film frame due to the physical size difference of 8mm film and the widescreen aspect ratio. See our sample movie page to view our videos in fullscreen & widescreen formats. The film is scanned at a moderate speed of 6 to 8 frames per second using a sprocketless drive system that protects your films from the potential damage typically found on other sprocket driven projectors and transfer devices. The light source used to scan the film is a low wattage diffused bulb; no hot spots or chance of ever burning the film. The film is then digitized using a NTSC broadcast quality camera system with a separate progressive 1/3" scan CCD for each primary color (red, green and blue). Each CCD contains 680,000 pixels and together they deliver an unsurpassed image quality transfer you would only expect to find on a professional Rank Transfer. |
