Ω THE STORY BEHIND IT Ω
By the time 94 Impala SS came to the scene I was a full time car builder and owned a body shop for 11 years. The Impala bug bit me pretty hard and by 1997 I was building Impalas and clones exclusively at the rate of 1 every two months on average. Having built 30 + of them I learned ways to clone most efficiently. My education as a sculptor + passion for hot rodding fueled the never-ending search for improvements and innovations. From business stand point they had to make sense: not to take up too much time to implement, reasonable cost, ect. I tried it all - replacing 1/4 panels, welding pieces into 1/4 window opening, fiberglass inserts, actual '94 Impala SS window (wich were unique to that particular year and now are discontinued).
Finally - the best way to convert f a '91 style triangular window to Impala SS one - plastic insert which bolts to the pinch weld and accepts 95-96 Caprice/Impala SS window without any mods to the 1/4 panel. The result - '94 Impala SS look at minimum cost and simple installation. Enjoy!
Optional: Pair of inserts for the old style interior window trim, made of plastic with textured finish for extra $45.
Comes painted in Impala SS grey. 5 minutes bolt-on installation.
See last two pics.

Questions displayed on this listing
Q: I just wanted to give you the all do respected for creating this product, but have you tried to take an actual impala window and replace it and bondo the remaining end thanks so much for your time.

Yes,I have done that. Of course just bondo by itself isn't gonna do, it needs some backing. First I was welding a piece of sheetmetal in the corner and finished it with bondo. Metal piece welded too deep needs a lot of bondo, and it will eventually crack. metal piece welded closer to the surface will need small amount of bondo but it's easy to heatwarp the surrounding quater panel welding, and then one needs to spend more time fixing that. (more bondo again). I also tried laying fiberglass instead of metal, and finishing with bondo. It works good if you know how to work with fiberglass, and find a good balance between how deep the base piece is in and now much bondo used to finish. Again, too much bondo will crack for a good chunk of it expands and contracts with the temp change, and too little will alow fiberglass texture to show through paint few months later. Any of the approaches is good if properly done, they all require an 95-96Impala SS/Caprice window, it is just the matter of choosing one conciedering time and $$$ involved and skilles of the one doing the job. And of course, Filling up the corner and finishing it up with bondo means the quarter panel needs painted. For those choosing an insert in question that would not be nesessary, just paint the insert itself. Thanks for the question, it was right down to the point! | |
