These extraordinary beauties were salvaged from an 1890 Brownstone in the upper west side of Manhattan, New York. They were original to the building’s construction. We restored them to their almost original splendor. Almost original because we had to patch up a hole made by an underpaid, depression era, city worker who didn’t believe in the principle of doing more than paid for, and decided to route a pipeline through the doors instead of through the walls.
The doors have solid quartersawn oak cores with quarter-inch thick veneers on both sides: quartersawn oak on one side and mahogany on the other. The hole on the oak side was patched with oak, but the mahogany side was patched with old black walnut because no mahogany was available. Walnut and mahogany have differing colors and stain differently but have a similar grain, so if you stain them properly the patch won’t stand out too much. However, since we’ve had the doors, I found that the patch makes a great conversation piece.
Another intriguing and unique aspect of these doors are the hand-carved panels located on the lower cross rails. The carvings on the oak side match one another, but on the mahogany side they’re different. Both doors have an arrangement of three raised panels contoured with wide molding on both sides.
We acquired them with only partial hardware, so we gave them appropriate, ornate period hardware made by Norwalk. In the photos, most of the hardware is shown without screws, because we’re leaving it up to you to decide, which side will be the front and which will be the back. The doors still have their original rollers on the bottom, but do not have their track hardware. However, I always recommend using newer track hardware (such as from Johnson Hardware: http://johnsonhardware.com/pdindex.htm) because it is more reliable; old hardware is more likely to derail, and with each door weighing between 150-200lbs, it’s not something easily corrected unless you’re a patient, steady-handed weightlifter.
They’re condition is just as remarkable as their beauty. Except for one chipped upper corner on the mahogany side of one of the doors, both doors are in excellent shape. Once stained or painted, these amazing doors will make a grand impact in whichever home or business they are installed.
