Industry reviews
PreS-Gr 1 A splattering paintbrush upsets a child until he sees how much fun it is to create clowns and circus animals from the blobs of bright color. He adds some cut-paper designs to a piece of paper in his sketchbook, and shows his friends that with a creative and experimental attitude they, too, can enjoy and perhaps even profit from a mistake. The clever, brilliantly hued, photoreal illustrations are done from the perspective of looking down at the young artist's painting. His picture, primitive yet sophisticated, dominates the full-page verso and is rimmed by crayons, paints, and scissors, along with glimpses of youngsters' heads and hands. The minimal, rhymed, lively text appears on the recto and is framed by black-and-white art supplies, making an attractive contrast to the color page.
