Check out my other items! A Brief History of Sylacauga Marble by Ruth Beaumont Cook written in prepartion for the Sylacauga Marble Festival April 17-30, 2009. History is most satisfying when people are eager to share their memories and their personal stories. I found a wealth of such people in Sylacauga, Alabama and I am deeply grateful for the time and thought each of them put into sharing about the marble, Gantts Quarry, and Giuseppe Morretti. This brief history only touches on those stories, but is is richer and clearer because of them. Since the time of the first quarries in 1830s, the marble underlying Sylacauga, Alabama has been compared in purity and strength to the marble found near Pietrasanta in Italy. This book tells of that story. This is a beautiful book with color photographs; 34 pages. Cover of book has marble abstract by William Decatur Whetstone, Jr. Back of book has "Falling Star" done by Don Lawler. |
