Here we offer a real treat. This is a TRUE 9th edition (stated-see pic,) of the classic novel, A Christmas Carol, by Charles Dickens. This IS NOT A FACSIMILE, (which are pawned as the real thing all over Ebay, and which you know by their red cover, no gilt, and lack of a Roman numbered copyright date.) The fact is, it is extremely, extremely rare to see a true copy of Christmas Carol on Ebay any older than, say, 1856, let alone 1844, the same year stamped in the first edition. (I encourage you to try a "completed items" search--there will not be anything remotely close.)
Salmon cover, gilt all around and as an adornment on front board and spine, 4 hand-colored Leech plates and 4 in-text etchings. High-quality, bright paper, some slight toning, light sporadic spotting to pages and around some edges of illustrations, but all illustrations are clean. Very small 1/4-inch tear at center bottom of "Marley's Ghost," but does not encroach on the illustration or in any significant way on the page. Boards are spotted (see pics,) but this book has been entirely, expertly rebound (with mark "Alex Hill b, Edin b,") which is worth a good deal in itself. Book is tight, square. A nice, solid copy of this title.
This is a wonderful literary relic of an absolutely marvelous work that retains today the full force it had in 1844. Its 6.5 x .5 x 4.5-inch size gives it that comfortable feel these early Chapman & Hall books had. It is a beautiful book that is thrilling just to hold (and, thanks to the rebind, to even read and enjoy!)
This book would make a gift to spoil someone very special or a treasured centerpiece for your fine books collection.
