LA3-31. Sherlock Holmes in Portrait and Profile, by Walter Klinefelter. Introduction by Vincent Starrett. Stated: "First published by Schocken Books: New York in 1975." (Originally published as a small hard covered monograph by Syracuse University Press: 1963). 7-3/4 x 10-3/4 inch stiff paper covered paperback. Color pictorial front cover. 104 pages containing 65 black and white illustrations. Also included are Notes and an Index. Detailed study of the artists and illustrators who drew the world's most famous detective, Sherlock Holmes. A pictorial account of the noted illustrators of Sherlock Holmes, tracing the history of Holmesian portraiture in England and America over a period of almost 60 years. From the preface: "...Sherlock Holmes received illustrative treatment at the hands of quite a number of artists, no two of whom seem to have perceived or visualized the same Sherlock Holmes. The Holmesian portraiture that resulted was of a kind that does not lend itself readily to review in the form generally employed in pictorial or photographic biographies. Therefore, that which follows is more or less a story-by-story or book-by-book account of what the detective's various portrayers made of him as the piecemeal records of his cases were inconsecutively released." CONDITION: Tiny corner bends and curls, minor soiling and other wear to the paper covers. Name and numeric rubberstamp marking on hte pre-title page.
