This is an interesting antique cornet made by A. DeMaer of Paris. Information on the DeMaer company has been difficult to locate. They were for a short time distributed by York in the late 1800's. I am guessing by the design features on this instrument that it was manufactured around the early 1900's. We have ultrasonically cleaned and flushed this horn so it is ready to go.
Some of the features of this cornet include:
- It has two main tuning slides; one for Bb, one for C. The first and third slides have reference lines marked for Bb settings
- A unique Y shaped double water key
- slides and valves work well (#3 valve has a very slight drag)
- Includes two mouthpiece receiver bits. A long one (6") and a short one (3.5") I am not sure as to why. One suggestion was that the long one may have been added later when the A=440 low pitch standard was adopted. We did notice that with the long mouthpipe, the cornet played in tune to 440. Also, the design on the ferrule of the long mouthpipe does not match the horn design.
- The C main tuning slide wing screw does not move. I am not sure if it is cross threaded or soldered (or glued) and did not wish to take a chance damaging the instrument to find out. The slide is greased and moves freely, though.
- The case is original and is amazingly free of the mildew smells that usually accompany these old horns. It has several leather straps to hold the extra slide, mouthpipes, mouthpieces, etc. All the leather is intact!
- Mouthpiece included is stamped Buescher True-Tone 8 and is in good shape with a little plating wear on the shank as shown in photo.
- The only non logoed marking on the instrument are the numbers 22-23-24 stamped on the outside of the valve casings. There is no serial number.
- Cornet is relatively dent free. There are a handful of very small dings but no signs that it ever sustain any major trauma. Silver finish in in great shape.
- An old vintage brass lyre is included but I doubt that it was original.
