Absolutely the very best map/ephemera/document storage cabinet that I have seen in 40 years in antiques. Just dynamite! Generously proportioned - 5'6" tall, 38" deep and 28"wide. This solid quarter cut oak piece dates to the 1800's. Has a metal plaque on the case and another on the roll. They read "The Universal Business Tickler Co., Chicago, Ill" and "Universal Tickler Manufactured by A.H. Andrews Co.". "Andrews" was in business in Chicago from 1865 to 1895. The door is a rolltop device. There are 7 molded panels on each side and 6 on the back. There is a base molding with a molded edge. Original varnish finish with appropriate patina. Just out of a Buffalo, N.Y., attic and untouched. The interior starts at the top with a pull out section with multiple small storage slots. It pulls out and, when a release on the side is pushed, swings out to reveal another set of small storage compartments. There are 22 map drawers with the original bronze handles that have state names molded into them. The map drawers all measure 31" by 22 1/2" by 1 1/8" deep. The inside measurements of these drawers are all 29" by 21 1/2" by 5/8" deep, which means that the maximum size that can be stored in them is 29" by 21 1/2". The inside edges of all sides of the drawers are chamfered and the sides are dovetailed to the drawer face. Bottoms of these drawers all have original paper 19th century U.S. state maps on them. There is also a section with 4 deeper drawers with cast iron handles. A pullout slide for placing documents on for examination is located in the map drawer section. All drawers work well. Some have remanents of old paper labels showing the various documents that were stored in them. The cabinet is in fine condition with only a recessed pull on the roll and a piece of the small molding on the back missing. Has to be the best Victorian map/document cabinet you could find considering the rare form, utility and quality. Free delivery to your choice of trucking companies in the Niagara Falls/Buffalo area.
