A SMALL  HANDWOVEN SPLIT OAK VINTAGE CHEROKEE BASKET WITH DYED ROUNDS.

This basket is a smidgen over five inches high, five and a half inches in diameter at the rim, and flares ever so slightly to about six inches near the base. Some of the splints that are woven around the circumference of the basket and those which wrap the rim of the basket are dyed with what appears to be natural dye stuff, most likely walnut hulls and possibly natural red earth. Anyway, some splints are dyed a darker brown and some are a reddish brown in color. All of the ribs, or upright splints, are natural in color, undyed. The entire basket has a nice patinated look, an indication of its age, which I would guess to be 50 or 60 years, maybe more. This basket shows almost no wear, but there is a small section on the rim where the wrapping is slightly loose (see photo 6). Otherwise the weaving is nice and tight. My opinion is that this basket dates to the mid-20th century, probably from the mid-1940s to the early 1950s - a time when the Qualla Boundary, The Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and other locales of the Eastern Band of Cherokees in North Carolina were becoming popular tourist destinations. A probable indication of the 50 or 60 year-old age of this basket, barely discernible, is on its base - there, written in pencil is "25 cents" (the numerals 2 and 5 plus a cent sign).

This basket will be carefully packed in soft wrapping and securely shipped in a very sturdy box via USPS First Class Mail. The winning bidder may request insurance at the full value at his or her own expense. PAYPAL ONLY, please.
