*WONDERFUL AMERICANA UTILITARIAN KNIFE BOX ~ TRAY*
*AMERICAN MAPLE & PINE*
*HANCOCK, MASS ~ POSSIBLY SHAKER*
Thank you for stopping by and looking. This week I will begin offering some wonderful and quite unique antique pieces, please take a look at our other auctions. Many of the pieces I will be offering have some special aspects to them, something that makes them a bit out of the ordinary, one of a kind treasures and very special. I will also be offering a retired antique dealers life-long collection of fine antiques, Americana primitives, and other collectibles, a wonderful array of rarities and quality finds are scheduled.
This auction is for an elegantly primitive Americana 1800s knife box re: utilitarian carry tray created from American maple & pine. Construction exhibits very early hand cut dovetail work in all 4 corners with scribing, features 3 compartments. Though generally called a knife box or knife tray, this early utilitarian woodenware box has unlimited decorating possibilities and uses. Box originates from Hancock, Mass., the previous owner related that this box was Shaker made, however I can only mention this as a possibility, however the form is very indicative to 'straight line' Shaker woodenware. Measures 14 1/2" x 8 1/2", walls are 3 1/4" tall x 5" tall at the handle. Maple has a warm glowing characteristic with mild striping, patina is honey & chestnut in color with oxidation in the right places. The bottom of the box is American pine, a couple of fine shrinkage cracks are noted from old age, nothing that detracts or effects the boxes value. Many years ago someone put putty in the nail holes on the underside of the box, see photo #9. This lovely Americana Old Country antique knife box would certainly compliment any fine collection of treenware or woodenware collectibles. Offered with a very low reserve which simply covers our investment and eBay's down times. Thanks for stopping in and enjoy the auction....
Photos #11&12 are included for your 'interest only' to show other primitive items from this collection that we are going to be offering, please be sure to view our other auctions.
