A Superb Pre-Columbian Nayarit Polychrome Seated Male Ballplayer, Ixtlan del Rio Style, Protoclassic ca. 100 B.C. to A.D. 250.
This extraordinary hollow Nayarit figure with red slip and cream colored slip decoration, dating to the Protoclassic Period of the West Mexican sculptural tradition, ca. 100 B.C. to A.D. 250, has finely detailed and painted features: the convex and heavily lidded eyes with remains of white pigment, a realistically formed aquiline nose adorned with four nose rings, a polychrome "twisted turban" style headdress, each ear decorated with five complex earrings, appliqued necklace with creamy painted beads on front and reverse. He has wide creamy painted armbands, appliqued waistband holding protective ballplayer covering secured to his mid-section, and legbands with remains of black pigment on the edges. A red painted ball is grasped in his left hand, the fingers detailed, as well as the toes. There is an opening on the top of the head, which serves as the vent for this sculpture. An exceptional patina, which includes multiple ancient deposits of manganese oxide and other dendrites, is apparent overall. FSA:EA
