More scarce vintage cornets from the collection of the man with the houseful of horns! This is a silverplated shepherd's crook cornet made in England about 1880 - 90. A medallion on the bell reads "Scheerer & Sons Leeds"; fancy ferrules and the forked water key help date this instrument. The finish is quite good; not tarnished, about 95% of the silver remains. There are no dents or dings, though I can see evidence of repairs over the years at a leadpipe brace and around the water key mounts. The cornet plays with a good bright voice despite somewhat worn valves - heavy valve oil makes it work. The third slide is balky at the moment but will free up as the others have. This is a good heavyweight cornet that can be a player or would make a nice collectible. It was the only one from this maker in the collection. It plays in modern pitch with the (not original) mouthpiece shank shown. Generic mouthpiece included as shown.
