germanium, selenium, phosphorus, copper, and iron) and amino acid
(isoleucine and methione)!
This treasured berry is traditionally used to improve general
metobolism, strengthen the immune system, and boost energy. Goji juice
can help support blood pressure levels and promote healthy joints. Goji
contains polysaccharides and phytonutrients and is a natural source of
antioxidant vitamins.
Goji Berries are reported to contain 18 Amino acids (six times
higher than bee pollen), more Beta Carotene than carrots, more Iron
than spinach, and 21 Trace Minerals.
Goji Berries also contain Vitamin B1, B2, B6, and Vitamin E
(rarely found in fruits). The Goji Berry contains more Vitamin C by
weight than oranges!
Goji berries are 13% protein. This bright red berry also
contains many complex compounds, and phytonutrients, which explains in
part, the incredible health benefits being experienced by people today.
The Goji Berry also contains extremely high levels of antioxidants. It
is quite possibly the highest antioxidant food on earth.
The Goji Berry is also being called the world’s most powerful
anti-aging food. It is rated #1 on the ORAC scale (Oxygen Radical
Absorbance Capacity), which measures the antioxidant level in foods. It
is a test developed by USDA researchers out of Tufts University in
Boston.
As you can see from the chart above, the Goji Berry possesses an
unmatched ability to absorb injurious, free radicals that attack the
body and contribute to the aging process and many diseases.
Our bodies are constantly being bombarded by these free
radicals because of the air we breathe, the water we drink, the
pesticides on our fruits and vegetables, the chemicals we clean with,
the preservatives in our processed food, etc...
Eating foods high in antioxidants is one way we can help our bodies combat these free radicals.
Mangosteen taste like cranberries and makes Rooibos extremely delicious & healthy!
The tropical
fruit mangosteen is so incredibly delicious, that people who have
tasted it just can’t seem to stop talking about it. These lucky few
Americans who’ve enjoyed The Queen of Fruits, will wax rhapsodic, their
eyes glazing over, in their search for words to convey the
exquisiteness of its flavor, the luxury of its taste.
Even if we can’t savor the flavor, we can fortify
our bodies with the functional benefits. Mangosteen is an
off-the-charts antioxidant available as either a juice or in capsules.
The wondrously flavorful juice is made from the snow-white interior of
the fruit that pulls apart in segments much like an orange.
However tasty it may be, the white flesh, like many other white foods,
is relatively low in nutrition. It’s the deep-red rind of the fruit
that’s the source of the nutritional benefits. Just like other fruits
and vegetables with deep colors, the rind is rich in plant compounds
that are powerhouse antioxidants.
Antioxidants are the good guys in our
diets--substances that neutralize damaging free radicals in the body.
Some of the first antioxidants discovered were Vitamin C and Vitamin E.
More recently, plant pigments, the things that produce the colors in
fruits and vegetables, have been found to contain even more potent
antioxidant ability. This provides scientific proof of the common-sense
notion that a diet with a wide variety of deeply colored fruits and
vegetables is healthy.
Free radicals are the bad guys, naturally
produced in the body by our regular functioning. Free radicalsare
a normal part of life. We see their damage all around us, from rust on
steel, to the brittleness of old plastic, to the lines on our faces.
Free radicals damage healthy cells. They have been identified as
major causes of disease andwhat we call aging may really be
accumulated damage of free radicals over time. All the things we know
are bad for us such as stress, smoking, andexposure to pollutants
increase production of free radicals in our body and can have long
lasting, damaging effects. Antioxidants work to stop free radical
damage and we all try to increase consumption of them in our diets.
There is a laboratory test that measures the
relative antioxidant power of foods called the ORAC test (Oxygen
Radical Absorbance Capacity). Not surprisingly, iceberg lettuce has a
low ORAC number while things such as blueberries have a high ORAC
number. The US government has estimated that Americans should consume a
diet that will provide them with a daily ORAC value of approximately
13,000.
Mangosteen juice is sold in the US as
dietary supplements and can provide a delicious and convenient way to
boost the antioxidant content of your daily diet. A good method
to use in evaluating a Mangosteen supplement is on the basis of that
ORAC number. Look for a product that has the highest number possible.
It helps assure you of getting the maximum antioxidant value.
Nothing takes the place of eating pure, well-grown
fruits and vegetables, but using a mangosteen supplement can provide a
valuable, convenient way to boost the antioxidant content in your diet.
Eat your antioxidants everyday and fight the effects of aging.
We've all heard the news for years about how important
it is to get the right amount of antioxidants in order to keep our
bodies healthy and ward of disease. Now there's a new classification of
antioxidants called xanthones, first discovered in the mangosteen
fruit, which are poised to be one of the biggest discoveries of modern
science in terms of health benefits.
While the concept of antioxidants may seem even more confusing
when adding in another aspect, xanthones are fairly easy to understand,
given their clear-cut, scientifically-proven benefits.
What are Xanthones found in Mangosteen?
Technically put, xanthones are a set of chemical compounds that
can be synthetically produced, but are more often found and more potent
in their natural settings. Xanthones are powerful antioxidants in a
family of phytonutrients.
To date, researchers have discovered and classified
approximately 200 xanthones, 40 of which are found in the mangosteen
fruit. As a matter of fact, xanthones were first discovered when
scientists began studying the health benefits of mangosteen based on
its traditional indigenous medical uses.
Research into the medicinal properties of xanthones found in
the mangosteen began in the 1970s, and gradually picked up pace as
scientists began finding more exciting nutritional properties. Between
1996 and 2005, an exponential amount of research has been done in
regards to mangosteen and its xanthones, and even more studies are in
the works.
Xanthones in Mangosteen
To recap, xanthones are powerful antioxidants, and out of the
200 xanthones known to science, 40 of them are found in mangosteen.
But what do the antioxidant properties of the xanthones in
mangosteen do for you? Antioxidants function as a balance for free
radicals in the body. Free radicals are potentially harmful, yet
oftentimes natural substances in your body that, when left free reign,
build up and cause diseases like cancer, heart disease, and more.
The xanthones function to travel through your body, literally
mopping up the free radicals on their way, leaving your body cleaner
and healthier than before.
Some of the most important xanthones found in mangosteen include:
Alpha-mangostin
Beta-mangostin
Gamma-mangostin
Garcinone
Garcinone A
Garcinone C
Garcinone D
Mangostanol
Gartanin
These, among other xanthones, have been touted by independent
researchers to have properties to include antiinflammatory,
anticonvulsant, antiallergic, antitumor, and antiplatelet, to name just
a few.
Known Benefits of Xanthones
Scientific research has made it abundantly clear that no other
fruit compares in its health benefits to mangosteen, due to its
xanthones and other nutritional properties.
Helping to fight cancer is just one of the many properties
that different xanthones perform. For instance, one study performed in
Japan showed that the xanthone alpha-mangostin had apparent properties
that suppressed the development of tumors. Another, performed in China,
found the xanthone garcinone E to show significant anticancer effects
in terms of liver, lung, and gastric cancer cells.
In addition, some xanthones have shown significant
antimicrobial effects in terms of fighting MRSA (methicillin-resistant
staphylococcus aureus), which is a bacterial strain known for its
tenacious resistance to pharmacologic antibiotics. One scientific study
also showed that alpha-mangostin, beta-mangostin, and garcinone B to
have pronounced inhibition effects on a strain of tuberculosis.
As if that isn't enough, xanthones have also been
scientifically proven to help lower LDL, the bad cholesterol, by
protecting the LDL from coming into contact with free radicals, thus
leaving it unable to oxidize and attach to arterial walls and cause
atherosclerosis.
Taking into account the anticancer, antiinflammatory,
antimicrobial, and cholesterol-lowering effects of the xanthones found
in mangosteen, here is just a sampling of the other many benefits that
science has either researched or is in the process of discovering:
Antiviral
Helps lower blood pressure
Helps fight fatigue
Antidepressant
Prevents stomach ulcers
Aids with weight loss
Antiaging
Combats diarrhea
Pain reducer
Heart protective
Analgesic
Anti-parkinsonian and anti-Alzheimer
Lowers fevers
Builds immunity to disease
Antiallergen
Antifungal
Antiparasitic
Indeed, even now some health practitioners are suggesting
drinking mangosteen juice for relief to people who suffer from the
following diseases:
Infections
Skin ailments like psoriasis, seborrhea, or eczema
Joint problems and arthritis
Dementia
Anxiety and depression
Cancer
Chronic pain
Chronic fatigue syndrome
Ulcers
Diabetes
The Fruit with Xanthone Power
As time goes by, it's becoming less and less uncanny how
traditional and folk medicine seems to have a grasp on the nutritional
properties of food better than modern science has in the past. Indeed,
it seems in some cases, especially in that of the mangosteen, science
is working to catch up.
The mangosteen fruit is believed to have originated in the
Moluccas and the Sunda Islands. It's been used for decades upon decades
by people from Thailand, the Philippines, and China in folk medicine to
treat dysentery, skin disorders like eczema, diarrhea and cystitis,
among other ailments.
One of the reasons why mangosteen is only now gaining
notoriety and popularity is because, for many years, direct importation
of the fruit from other countries has been illegal, based on
governmental regulations to help quarantine the Asian fruit fly.
Unfortunately, the mangosteen tree doesn't grow well in most or all
climates in the United States, so attempts to grow the fruit here have
been relatively unsuccessful.
However, as science has begun proving the unsurpassed medical
value of the rare mangosteen fruit and its xanthones, juices and
preserves are becoming more and more readily available.
In terms of taste, the mangosteen itself is considered one of
the most exquisitely delicious fruits nature has to offer. Often called
the "Queen of Fruits," the taste of mangosteen is unique, but is often
described as sweet and tangy with hints of pear, ripe strawberry, and
grape.
After sampling mangosteen, it's easy to see why this fruit is
so popular in Thailand due to its taste. And after learning about the
benefits of the xanthones found in mangosteen, it's even more clear how
nutritionally beneficial this amazing fruit is.
ROOIBOS
Pronounced "roy-boss" and means "red bush" in Afrikaans. The Rooibos Latin name is aspalathus linearis. Studies
have shown this tea is comparable to green tea in the amounts of
polyphenols it contains. It shows anti-mutagenic, anti-carcinogenic,
anti-inflammatory and anti-viral activity. In fact, it has much
more antioxidants of green tea.
Our Organic Rooibos tea is totally pure and natural. It
contains no additives, colorants or preservatives. It contains no
caffeine, which can be harmful to the central nervous system, causing
irritability, high blood pressure and erratic sleep patterns. It is low
in tannin, a substance which adversely affects the bodies metabolism by
decreasing the absorption of iron and protein. The clean, aromatic
flavour of Rooibos can safely be enjoyed in unlimited quantities
throughout the day or evening, with no harmful side-effects. In fact,
it makes a soothing and relaxing evening tea before sleep!
Rooibos tea is a natural herb unique to the South African
Cedarberg Mountains. During the summer months the Rooibos plants are
harvested, fermented and dried in nature's laboratory. Pure mineral
water, fresh mountain air and the hot African sun induces the change
from verdant green to the mahogany red of Rooibos tea. Rich in many
essential natural elements - to bring you a delicious elixir that you
will grow to love.
Enjoyed by native South Africans generation after generation.
Rediscovered by botanists in the 18th century, generations enjoyed it
for its naturally sweet taste - unaware of the startling powers this
wonder of nature possessed nor the wide spectrum of applications we
would come to discover.
Not until almost 200 years later, in 1968, when South African mother,
Annique Theron, stumbled across this plant's natural healing properties
and ability to soothe and pacify her young child. Annique went on to
investigate and document its amazing health promoting properties. She
set out to share her discovery with others and spread the good news of
Mother Nature's Lullaby.
Today her unique findings of this remarkable herbal remedy, have been
scientifically researched and have proved to be beneficial not just to
babies, but to all ages.
Initially, Rooibos was harvested as the wild-growing
"Aspalathus Linearis" plants by chopping them with axes and then
bruising them with hammers, leaving them to ferment in heaps, before
drying them in the sun. Today, the basic method of Rooibos production
from planting to harvesting is largely unchanged. However, the plants
are cultivated rather than collected from the wild. In addition,
production methods are far more mechanized and refined. Vast
improvements in production technology and stringent quality control now
ensure a superior quality product every step of the way, from seed to
finished product.
About 18 months after seedlings are planted, they become fully-grown
and are ready for harvesting. Plants are harvested once a year during
mid-summer. Cut Rooibos is bound in sheaves and milled to a uniform
length, then bruised between rollers to trigger the important chemical
process (fermentation) which results in the characteristic amber color,
distinctive flavor and sweet aroma of Rooibos.
Following fermentation, the Rooibos is spread thinly over large drying
yards to dry in the hot South African sun after which it is sucked up
by special vacuums. At this stage the product is generally referred to
as "farm tea".
At Rooibos Limited, we sort and grade the product according to length,
color and flavor.
Rooibos helps delay the aging process! The aging of our bodies
is caused by toxic compounds called free radicals which are produced as
a by-product of normal cell function. These free radicals attack our
healthy cells. Over our lifetime this damage contributes to aging and
our immune system weakens. Recently, Japanese scientists have found
that Rooibos tea contains a mimic of the enzyme Super Oxide Dismutase
(S.O.D.), an antioxidant which attacks the free radicals and limits
their damaging effects.
Rooibos helps to relieve stomach ulcers, nausea, constipation, and heartburn.
Have a cup of Rooibos before you get ready for bed to ensure a
good night's sleep! Rooibos has been found to help with insomnia,
disturbed sleeping patterns and headaches. It contains no caffeine and
has a relaxing effect on the central nervous system.
Rooibos helps to give you strong bones and teeth because of its calcium, manganese and fluoride content.
Rooibos helps pacify infants with colic, stomach cramps and sleeping
problems. Simply mix some Rooibos tea with expressed breast milk or
formula. It is 100% natural with no colorants or preservatives. It is a
mother's miracle.
Rooibos contains alpha hydroxy acid and zinc for healthy,
smooth skin. This wonder tea is especially useful when applied to skin
irritations like itchy skin, eczema, sunburns, diaper rash and acne.
Put used rooibos tea bags in the refrigerator or freezer. After a hard
day's work, put on tired or red eyes to soothe and relax.
Rooibos contains magnesium which is necessary for a healthy nervous system.
Rooibos increases the absorption of iron in the body.
Rooibos contains potassium and copper minerals that are necessary for several metabolic functions.
Rooibos is often prescribed for nervous tension and mild depression as it makes a relaxing sedative.
Rooibos contains no oxalic acid and can therefore be enjoyed by persons suffering from kidney stones.
Rooibos helps to control your appetite thus can be beneficial in weight loss.
Rooibos helps you recoup after a hangover.
Rooibos makes a great thirst-quencher and sport drink. Because
of its mineral content of iron, potassium, zinc, manganese and sodium,
it restores the body's equilibrium after strenuous exercise.
Rooibos is very versatile! Drink it hot or cold, with or
without milk, sugar or honey. Add lemon or mix it with fruit juices for
a lovely blend. Rooibos tea is also used in cooking and baking. It
replaces the liquid content in recipes for soups, marinades, sauces,
stews and cakes for added flavor and nutrition.
And Rooibos tastes divine! It is less bitter than most teas.
