His career started on the stage but he quickly advanced to film. He starred in many films during his lifetime including such popular classics as "The Maltese Falcon" (1941), "Casablanca" (1942), "To Have and Have Not" (1944), "The Big Sleep" (1946), "Treasure of the Sierra Madre" and "Key Largo" (1948). He won an Academy Award in 1952 for "The African Queen."
