Advertising: Reflections of a Century
by Bryan Holme
Hardcover, dust jacket in protective Mylar cover, 8 3/4" x 10", 256 pages, book in mint condition, dust jacket has one tear on front cover.
Illustrated throughout with hundreds of rare full-color advertisements.

From the dust jacket:

Advertising illustration, as we know it, came into its own in the 1880s and swiftly became the mirror par excellence of public events and popular taste. In this entertaining and enlightening book, Bryan Holme discusses the progress of the art and presents hundreds of landmark ads, posters, and magazine covers that chronicle our lives and those of our recent ancestors.

Here, superbly reproduced, are works by artists such as Chéret, Lautrec, Millais, Beardsley, Aldin, Christy, Flagg, Gibson, Rockwell, Erté, Kauffer, Cassandre, Vertes, Bérard, Binder, Giusti, Matisse, Chagall, Picasso, Miro, Eckersley, Dali, Hokinson, Steig, Arno, Steinberg, Artzybasheff, Searle, Alajalov, Bemelmans, Glaser, Max, and many others. As photography grew in popularity, the names of Steichen, Karsh, Beaton, Schulthess, Rawlings, Horst, Penn, Eisenstadt became music to the ears of advertising art directors. At the same time, the forms and faces of celebrated actors and entertainers were sought as endorsements: Ethel Barrymore lifting an elegant hem to reveal a Heatherbloom petticoat, Ina Claire in a Knox hat, Anna Pavlova kicking up her O'Sullivan's heels, Irene Castle in Corticelli silk. And of course there were all those wonderful posters, record and magazine covers, and advertisements for movies, concerts, and plays that featured the images of so many of our favorites: Charlie Chaplin, Douglas Fairbanks, Leslie Howard, Marlene Dietrich, Noel Coward, Gertrude Lawrence, Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, John Wayne, Lucille Ball, Mary Martin, the Beatles, Bob Dylan, Woody Allen. Wartime posters sternly remind us of tragic events: peacetime advertisements recall innovations to mad extravagance.

Written for the layman, filled with sparkle and interest, the book is an invaluable survey of the progress of graphic design and a kaleidescopic view of what life has been like for the past one hundred years.
