LITTLE GIRL WITH BIG DOG
Charles Allerton & Sons
Staffordshire England
c. 1890
This is a wonderful child's transferware plate, circa 1890. Originally part of a complete children's tea service, the plate measures about 5-1/2" in diameter.
The decoration is transfer printed in a bright sky blue. The piece depicts a little girl, named Mae or May, standing with her arms around a huge dog. Little May is wearing a big hat and the dog appears to be smiling. This endearing scene is framed by an aesthetic background of flowers, birds and lots of geometrical whimsies.
It is marked with pattern number 766 and registration number 69456, registered by Charles Allerton & Sons, a pottery manufacturer in the Staffordshire region of England who was well known for his whimsical children's tea sets. The influence of the Aesthetic movement on the pattern design captures the Victorian love of nature and the exotic. The pattern is known as "Little May with Dog" or "Girl with Dog".
The plate is in great condition, with no chips, cracks or repairs. Stray blue paint and other minor manufacturing flaws, typical of these early wares and original to the making. Fine overall crazing consistent with age. The plate displays beautifully. Its a great example of naive and whimsical early wares!
