In Spring 1918 The Australian Light Horse Parcipitated in Two Raids East Of Jordan, as a result the Turks in an effort to consolidate their forces & defend The Hijaz Railway concentrated an Infantry Force at Shunet Nimrin astride the Road to Es Salt & the important Hejaz Railway. On April 30th with The British 60th Infantry Division making a Frontal Attack the Australian Mounted Division after seizing the Bridgehead at Damieh was to capture Es Salt to take the Turks in a planned Rear action.
At dawn on the 30th, the 3rd & 4th Light Horse Brigades commenced planned attacks but were observed by enemy gunners who proceeded to fire, this caused the cavalry to seperate & spread out. Unable to secure the Brigehead, the 4th Brigade took up a position on the Damieh-Es Salt Road, and the 3rd Brigade captured Es Salt in a briliant action. The Turkish defences at Shunet Nimrin could not be pierced & next morning a large force of The Turks attacked the 4th Brigade which by May 3rd was forced to retreat & withdraw back to Es Salt.
