ANZAC MOUNTED DIVISION AT ROMANI AUGUST 16th 1916

 The Key To Palestine

By G.W. Lambert.

We are Pleased to offer this stunning AUSTRALIAN WAR MEMORIAL Contemporarily published Vintage (1933) item by G.W. Lambert an Australian artist.

Romani Oasis is in Western Egypt, across the Suez Canal, on the Northern route to Palestine and was part of the forward defence of Egypt in the early days of the war before the successful offensive which cleared the allied way to Damascus.

At 1am on August 4th 1916 the Turks attacked the Australian positions. Although forced to give ground on their right  the 1st brigade held the onslaught until reinforced at dawn by the 2nd Brigade, consisting of the 6th & 7th Regiments and the Wellington Mounted Rifles.

The two brigades of Chauvel's Mounted Division then fought a well planned rear guard action. Almost overwhelmed by superior numbers, the two brigades fell back but by hard fighting and joined by the 52nd Division, the attack was halted by mid morning.

The Auckland & Canterbury Mounted Rifles & the Gloucester & Worcester Mounted Yeomanry then launched a counter attack which routed the Turks.

The Battle of Romani was a thus a defining battle in the Middle East Campaign which altered British Operations in Sinai from Defence to Offense & Opened the way to the invasion of Palestine & Syria.

This Print, Actually printed in 1933 on High quality paper is 26 cm x 12.5 cm and is ready mounted for framing

A superb and Vintage 1933 item which will look stunning when professionally framed under glass.

(Background mounting colour may vary from that pictured).
