The extrication of the Australian Field Artillery Batteries from an apparently Hopeless position at Robecq occurred during the German breakthrough at Lys in April 1918. Among the reinforcements hastened to the scene was the 12th A.F.A. Brigade which remained in action for two days North Of Robecq. On the Fourth day of battle(April 12th), the Batteries came intense heavy fire and were ordered to pull out. Within a breath-taking 6 Minutes since receiving orders the Guns were limbered up and ready to go. Marshes blocked in the rear and the road to safety was 150 yards distant towards advancng German Infantry. Gunners were dispatched with rifles & Lewis guns to hold off and cover the Brigade which moved onto the road in line, wheeled left in column & galloped away whilst under fire. EVERY team & waggon got through, though with some casualties to men & horse.
