ALASKA.... RUN TIMES...16.00 ...16.37 As a child in the 60s, we would have "film day" and these kinds of films were the meal of the day. Watching this took me back to that great feeling I had when the teacher said it was film day. This 50s geography film about Alaska contains interesting historical footage of what the state looked like back then, as well as some funky topographic maps that look like they were made out of plasticene. Film briskly goes over many points, carefully to point out the New Alaska first, with it's farming, fishing and transportation benefits, and THEN briskly go over Eskimo life. Interesting to see the ramshackle structures of the University, which looks hopelessly unstable. Film ends on a hopeful note, as the music swells and the narrator says to look out for the Youth in Alaska, who will lead the way. interesting film, narrated by Father Bernard Hubbard, traces Alaska's history from it's purchase by Seward to it's current focus on industry, mainly Salmon. The first half is dominated by Alaska's geography, where the scenery, some apparently shot by Father Hubbard himself is presented. Outstanding tableus of Bergs, mountains and early Juneau is presented. The 2nd part lives up to the title by focusing on it's silver millions, which is Salmon. Salmon is shown going to their spawning ground, captured by trawlers by the millions and then a sometimes gruesome overview of how fish are canned. A little historically dated, and some bizarre info is given (The fact that Alaska is on the 'northern tip of the USA' is shocking), but still quite interesting to watch. © 2008 historicdvds.com
