Fine and decorative copper engraved plate including, on one sheet, four views of Palace of Cleopatra VII Philopator, at Alexandria, in Egypt. In ancient times, Alexandria was one of the most famous cities in the world. It was founded around a small pharaonic town c. 331 BC by Alexander the Great. It remained Egypt's capital for nearly a thousand years, until the Muslim conquest of Egypt in 641 AD when a new capital was founded at Fustat ( Fustat was later absorbed into Cairo ).

Strong and dark impression on strong paper. Paper with chains and wiremark. Wide margins. Small foxing and browning. Small tear at lower margin. In general good conditions.

 

De Bruyn was primarily a landscape artist and his love for drawing and painting was partly motivated by their usefulness in representing accurately what travellers had seen during their visits to foreign lands. In The Hague, de Bruin studied painting with the master Theodoor van der Schuur. De Bruin spent the remainder of his life pursuing his interest in art and visiting friends in various towns in the Netherlands.
