This is a powerful album. But like all Alice Cooper albums it refuses to take itself too seriously and thus never comes across as preachy or self-pitying. No this is a blast from the first track to the last. Alice spent some time in rehab and then collaborated with the master of dark lyrics, Bernie Taupin, and several musicians he'd never worked with before to turn out some very touching, funny, scary, kooky, enjoyable tunes.
Alice's first four solo albums all more or less deal with his alcoholism-- and this one at least deals a bit with recovery-- but the fun isn't sacrificed for a second. The title track comes on strong and establishes that this will be a more keyboard heavy album than expected by Alice fans-- but there's plenty of great guitar work from Dick Wagner and Steve Lukather. The Quiet Room is a haunting vignette about isolation. The US #12 single How You Gonna See Me Now is an early "power ballad" (maybe the original). Inmates (We're All Crazy) is a wickedly twisted song that probably boils the theme of Alice Cooper's entire career down to a single line, 'We're All Crazy.' If you understand what I mean by that, then this is the album for you. It's one of those few albums that I always have to have a handy copy of, and I imagine I always will.
