Synopsis
Succinctly described in its introduction as "punk attitude with conservative principles," straight-edge, also known as hardcore, was a mid-1980s punk offshoot that was notable for its rejection of the traditional accompaniments to youthful rebellion, drink, and drugs, and which embraced more disciplined, though no less abrasive forms of music in the energetic, thrashing output of bands like Minor Threat and Uniform Choice. An almost ascetic reaction against punk's increased adoption by the cultural mainstream, the scene began in Boston, New York, and Washington D.C., eventually growing into a nationwide movement before itself falling victim to its own popularity. Beth Lahickey's revealing series of interviews with major and minor straight-edge figures is a well-illustrated inside look at the movement's history, influences, and prejudices, and its effects on the lives of its adherents. She finds some disillusioned and others following an ascetic path, but all having undergone a life-changing experience as a result of their involvement in this significant, fiercely tribal musical and cultural phenomenon.
