Alla Prima

Everything I Know About Painting

By Richard Schmid

***** HARDCOVER WITH DUSTJACKET *****

BRAND NEW

I have seen hardcover copies of Alla Prima sell as high as $195.00 on ebay.

Brand new book! This is the hard-to-find HARDCOVER edition of Alla Prima, 1999 Revised Edition, 9th printing. Alla Prima was originally published in 1998. In 1999, they came out with the revised edition. It has more commentary and information than the original 1998 edition.

Richard Schmid is a fabulous artist and teacher. His first book was Richard Schmid Paints the Figure, where he focused almost entirely on painting nudes. Then he wrote Richard Schmid Paints the Landscape, where he branched out into landscape paintings. This book is a great addition to the others, because he explores other avenues. He includes people (clothed and unclothed), landscapes, and much more including boats and flowers. There is even a beautiful painting of chickens, and another one of a Bengal Tiger!

The back cover says, "Welcome to this grand adventure through the world of painting! Read about talent, skill, confidence, perception, and control. Learn how to get past all the annoying little things that get in the way of creative thinking. Find out what values and edges are all about, some sound ways of starting, 19 key ideas about color and color harmony, drawing expertly, simplifying composition, the 40 most common problems in painting -- and what to do when a painting crashes. Explore with me these and the many other fascinating things that we all need to know to paint the paintings we dream of."

Dustjacket flap says, "Fifteen years in preparation, this book offers to the artist and art lover alike the wisdom and technical savvy of a lifetime of painting and teaching. Writing as an acknowledged master, Richard Schmid leads his reader gracefully through the subtleties of painting technique with refreshing clarity and unmatched technical authority. With an emphasis on painting from life, he writes with warm humor about the joys and trials of being an artist. He brings to life the romanace of Bravura painting and examines the mysteries of color in fascinating detail. A new view of design is offered, along with insights into the thinking of the great Masters. The virtuosity that painters strive for is presented as an attainable goal, but he also tells us what to do when everything goes wrong.

Above all, Richard writes with deep affection to all who strive for self-expression, regardless of their level of skill. He shares his own struggle from art school to the present and offers the things he has learned with the hope that his reader may enjoy the same passage of discovery. Lavishly illustrated, this book provides a unique overview of the rich historical background and theoretical ideas that underlie Direct painting, while examining in complete detail all of its technical problems and solutions. It also covers the full range of artistic subject matter and reveals the one thing a painter must know to capture it all.

Throughout his distinquished career as painter and teacher, Richard Schmid has been a candid spokesman for what is known as the Grand Manner, a certain mingling of virtuosity and unrestrained joy in Art. Since 1958 he has had 50 one-man shows and received every major art award in the United States. Richard currently lives in the hills of Vermont with his wife Nancy Guzik, the two cats, and Wolfgang the German Shepherd.

His work has been represented in the following:

The Smithsonian Institution
Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts
The Art Institute of Chicago
Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts
National Academy of Design
American Watercolor Society
Thomas Gilcrease Museum
The Frye Museum
Allied Artists of America

US buyers: S/H $4.00 by media mail or $11.00 by priority mail.

International buyers please use the ebay shipping calculator. There are two different postage options to choose from.

A lot of ebay bidders now bid in the last 10 seconds of an auction (this is called sniping). The price seems low all during the auction and then BAM (thanks Emeril!) the price jumps way up in the last 10 seconds and you don't have a chance to rebid. I've seen bids go from $50.00 to $150.00 in the last few seconds. That's why I like to post auctions with a "buy it now" option. You can just purchase the book immediately and you know it's yours. No bidding, you just buy it!!
