Publisher's Note
Illuminated Poems is the collaboration between two visionaries of different generations: Allen Ginsberg, the quintessential Beat and America's best-known poet, and Eric Drooker, an artist of the metropolis whose provocative images reflect life at the turn of the millennium. Illuminated Poems contains two never-before-published works, an introduction by Ginsberg and thirty-four poems from 1948 through the present day, including the poem "Howl" in its entirety. "Howl", perhaps the single poem that best captures the anguish and aspirations of the Beat Generation, was originally published forty years ago and is one of the most widely read poems of the century.
In the tradition of William Blake, the eighteenth-century English poet whose Illuminated Poems became a literary and artistic classic, Allen Ginsberg, the quintessential Beat, and Eric Drooker, an artist whose specialty lies in portraying the gritty urban environment in which he lives, have joined forces to create a book that will define the literary/artistic world of the 1990s.
This book includes the poem "Howl" in its entirety, four never-before-anthologized works, a brief introduction by the poet, and approximately fifty poems spanning 1948 through the present day. The poems are accompanied by fifty illustrations done specifically for this book, more than half of them in full color. "Howl," perhaps the single poem that best captures the anguish and aspirations of the Beat Generation, was originally published forty years ago and is one of the most widely read poems of the century.
Eric Drooker's powerful, stark imagery suggests the graphics of a modern-day Lynd Ward or Rockwell Kent. Born in 1958, Drooker won the 1994 American Book Award for Flood! A Novel in Pictures (Four Walls Eight Windows, 1992). Writing in The New York Times, Art Spiegelman called it "poetic and lyrical." Flood! was a Los Angeles Times fiction prize finalist as well as a New York Times Notable Book of the Year.
Allen Ginsberg, certainly the best-known poet in America and one of its leading literary figures, recently published Cosmopolitan Greetings (HarperCollins, 1994), a collection of his poems. Born in 1926 in Newark, N.J., he is a member of the American Institute of Arts and Letters and co-founder of the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics at the Naropa Institute, the first accredited Buddhist college in the Western world.

Industry reviews
"Ginsberg is both tragic and dynamic, a lyrical genius, con man extraordinaire, and probably the single greatest influence on American poetical voice since Whitman."
Book Jacket - Bob Dylan

"Drooker's old Poe hallucinations of beauteous deathly reality transcend political hang-up and fix our present American dreams."
Book Jacket - Allen Ginsberg

"Word and image mix with vigor and charm in this selection of poems from all periods of the poet's life. This is a fine presentation and gift volume of Ginsberg's poems. Recommended."
Pollan

"Restoring outrage--both the fury that impelled the poetry and the anger it generated in turn--may be the toughest thing for an illustrator to do, and Drooker's method is singular...(he) finds some of its hottest energy in a near slaphappy mirth...the collaboration with Ginsberg seems to have been especially felicitous."
