John King, Cincinnati,
1866, Full Leather, 768pp. with 78 dramatic woodcuts. John King, M.D. was one of the founders of
the Eclectic School of Medicine who discovered the active ingredients of many
native plants (Kaufman 415). This rare
text includes a 62 page chapter devoted to Obsetric Materia Medica
(Pharmacology).
The condition of the text is very good. The binding is tight. The covers show the normal minor blemishes –
few scruffs on front and back. The spine
is in very condition – with minor wear on the top and bottom; however, the
title is bright and visible. The corners
and edges are worn at several spots. The
interior of the text is very very good.
There is minimal foxing. No
apparent marks in the text. The pages
are fully intact and without notable tears or rips.
Description of the Content. Eclectic Medicine appeared
as an extension of early American herbal medicine traditions. Regular medicine at the time made extensive
use of purges with calomel and other mercury-based remedies, as well as extensive
bloodletting and Eclectic medicine was a direct reaction to those practices. The American Eclectic Obstetrics, chiefly to
note the introduction of the newer remedial agents into obstetric practice.
