AMERICIA'S CUP
CONTENDER
SCHOONER "GRAYLING" Ca 1887
Oil on canvas Unsigned
Unframed 22 3/4" L x 19" H Framed 26 1/4"L x 22 1/4" H
Presented is an original oil painting on canvas of the Racing Schooner "GRAYLING" in the lead in the Goelet Schooner Race of 1884 or 1886 which she won in both years. GRAYLING was designed by Phillip Ellsworth for Latham Fish, Commodore of the Atlantic Yacht Club. She was launched in 1883 and was 91 feet long with a beam of 23 feet and only drew 5 feet with her centerboard in the raised position. Later she unsuccessfully competed in the America's Cup Eliminations of 1887.
The aged look is enhanced by heavy crackleure and is handsomely framed in period style gilded wood. The painting is done by an artist trained in the style of the period who is a master of his craft. Consequently, It should be considered of recent vintage. The artist captures the excitement of sailing in a good breeze, cutting though the chops with three other schooners in her wake. All her sails set under a cloudy bright blue sky. A truly great painting of racing in the 1880's by an accomplished, but unknown artist.
